Large disparities on micro- and macroplastic concentrations are to be expected between residential, industrial, natural and agricultural areas, since specific uses of plastic will determine the magnitude of the corresponding emissions. The aim of this work was to develop a method to regionalize emissions of macroplastic and microplastic for soil, freshwater and air using geographical datasets on land-use statistics, traffic and population densities, wastewater treatment plants and combined sewer overflows as proxies. High resolution maps of the emissions were then generated for micro- and macroplastic using emission data available for Switzerland for seven commonly used polymers (low-density-polyethylene, high-density-polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene, expanded polystyrene, polyvinyl-chloride and polyethylene-terephthalate). Most of the emissions can be found in areas with high human activity, but the influence of the different proxies varies for each polymer. The median emission rate of macroplastic on soil varies from 0.0006 to 0.06 kg/ha/year, whereas no emission flows are predicted for more than 50% of the raster cells for microplastic regardless of the polymer, but the maxima can reach up to 12.7 kg/ha/a in the case of HDPE. The average emission rate of macroplastic along river segments ranges between 0.062 kg/km/a and 1.5 kg/km/a. For microplastic, the average emission rate varies from 0.0025 kg/km/a to 0.11 kg/km/a. The analysis reveals that a significant deviation is expected if the population density is used as only proxy. The correlation between the population density and the predicted emissions is only r = 0.16-023 fora cell size of 100 x 100 m and goes up to r = 0.86-0.88 fora resolution of 10 km, however an r of only 056-0.68 is observed for those polymers used a lot in agriculture such as HDPE and PP. The emission maps obtained in this work can serve as input to regionalized fate models for macro- and microplastics. (C) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Background: The availability of generic versions of bortezomib raises questions about the reliability of extrapolating stability data from one brand to another. Objective: To evaluate the stability of bortezomib formulations available from Janssen, Teva Canada, Actavis Pharma, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Apotex, and MDA, reconstituted with 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline) to produce solutions of either 1.0 or 2.5 mg/mL and stored over at least 21 days under refrigeration (4 degrees C) or at room temperature (either 23 degrees C or 25 degrees C) in the manufacturer’s original glass vials or in polypropylene syringes. Methods: On study day 0, solutions with concentration 1.0 mg/mL or 2.5 mg/mL of the Teva, Actavis, Dr. Reddy’s, Apotex, and MDA generic formulations were prepared. Three units of each type of container (glass vials and syringes) were stored at 4 degrees C and 3 units at room temperature. Concentration and physical inspection were completed on at least 8 study days (including day 0) over a 21- to 84-day study period. Bortezomib concentrations were determined by a validated stability-indicating liquid chromatographic method with ultraviolet detection. The end point of these studies was the time to reach 90% of the initial concentration (T-90) with 95% confidence, which is expressed as T-9095%CI, where CI refers to the confidence interval. In addition to estimating the T-9095%CI, differences in stability among products from all manufacturers were compared using multiple linear regression. Previously published data for the Janssen product were included in the overall comparisons. Results: In all of the studies, the analytical method separated degradation products from bortezomib, such that the concentration of bortezomib was measured specifically, accurately (deviations < 2.5%), and reproducibly (average replicate error 2.5%). During all studies, solutions retained more than 94% of the initial concentration at 4 degrees C. The T-9095% CI exceeded the study period for all formulations under all combinations of concentration, container, and temperature, except the 84-day study for the MDA product. Multiple linear regression showed no significant differences among manufacturers (p = 0.57). Conclusions: In this study, formulations of bortezomib currently marketed in Canada (by Janssen, Teva Canada, Actavis Pharma, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Apotex, and MDA) were pharmaceutically equivalent and interchangeable. Given that there was no difference in stability related to manufacturer, nominal concentration, or container, we conclude that these formulations are physically and chemically stable for at least 35 days under refrigeration and at least 25 days at room temperature. Balanced chemical reaction does not necessarily reveal either the individual elementary reactions by which a reaction occurs or its rate law. Antimicrobial cationic amphiphiles have broad-spectrum activity, and microbes do not readily develop resistance to these agents, highlighting their clinical and industrial potential. Cationic amphiphiles perturb the integrity of membranes leading to cell death, and the lack of discrimination between microbial and mammalian plasma membranes is thought to be one of the main barriers of using these agents for the treatment of systemic infections. Here, we describe the synthesis and study of 20 antimicrobial cationic amphiphiles that are derivatives of the aminoglycoside nebramine with different numbers of alkyl chain ethers that differ in length and degree of unsaturation. We determined antifungal activities and evaluated hemoglobin release from red blood cells as a measure of membrane selectivity and analyzed how serum influences these activities. Microscopic images revealed morphological transformations of red blood cells from the normal double-disc shape to empty ghost cells upon treatment with the cationic amphiphiles. Antifungal activity, hemolysis, and morphological changes in red blood cells decreased as the percentage of serum in the culture medium was increased. In images of red blood cells treated with fluorescently labeled amphiphilic nebramine probes, the accumulation of the cationic amphiphiles in the membranes decreased as serum concentration increased. This suggests that, in addition to its known effect of preventing the deformability of red blood cells, serum prevents interactions between cationic amphiphiles and the plasma membrane. The results of this study indicate that biological activities of cationic amphiphiles are abrogated in serum. Thus, these agents are suitable for external and industrial uses but probably not for effective treatment of systemic infections.

A detection system based on a microchannel plate with a delay line readout structure has been developed to perform scanning transmission ion microscopy (STIM) in the helium ion microscope (HIM). This system is an improvement over other existing approaches since it combines the information of the scanning beam position on the sample with the position (scattering angle) and time of the transmission events. Various imaging modes, such as bright field and dark field or the direct image of the transmitted signal, can be created by post-processing the collected STIM data. Furthermore, the detector has high spatial and temporal resolution, is sensitive to both ions and neutral particles over a wide energy range, and shows robustness against ion beam-induced damage. A special in-vacuum movable support gives the possibility of moving the detector vertically, placing the detector closer to the sample for the detection of high-angle scattering events, or moving it down to increase the angular resolution and distance for time-of-flight measurements. With this new system, we show composition-dependent contrast for amorphous materials and the contrast difference between small-angle and high-angle scattering signals. We also detect channeling-related contrast on polycrystalline silicon, thallium chloride nanocrystals, and single-crystalline silicon by comparing the signal transmitted at different directions for the same data set.

In this investigation, Mn-Al and Cu-Al as layered double hydroxide (LDH) adsorbents were prepared by co-precipitation method and Calcined/Cu-Al (Cu-Al LDO) was prepared by heating Cu-Al at 500 degrees C for sulfate (SO42-) removal from aqueous media. Results show that the Cu-Al LDO has the better adsorption capacity compared with Mn-Al and Cu-Al toward SO42-. To improve the selectivity and capacity of Cu-Al LDO, hybrid nanocomposites were obtained by in situ formation of an inorganic network (Cu-Al LDO) in the presence of organic compounds. Surfactants such as N-Alkyl-N,N-dimethyl-N-benzylammonium chloride (NDBA) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) are employed as organic compounds. The samples were characterized by N2 isotherm, XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDX with mapping, followed by SO42- adsorption studies. Central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM) was used for the optimization of variables for the SO42- uptake from waters using prepared samples. The interactive influence of four variable input parameters viz. initial concentration, adsorbent dose, time and pH were assessed. The adsorption mechanisms that controlled the SO42- adsorption were surveyed based on the adsorption thermodynamics and adsorption kinetics as well as adsorption isotherms. Furthermore, the effect of competitive anions and desorbing agents at different concentrations on the adsorption and desorption of SO42- was explored, respectively.

Ciprofloxacin drugs are a second-generation fluoroquinolone highly prescribed medication against various bacterial infections in human and aquaculture practices. These drugs are chemically designed to persist in the body long enough to achieve target objectives. Extensive usage has resulted in ciprofloxacin becoming a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment. Unfortunately, the ecotoxicological profiles for ciprofloxacin are scanty. This study was aimed to assess the ecotoxicity of ciprofloxacin at environmentally relevant concentrations (1 mu g/L, and 1.5 mu g/L) to a cultivable fish Cirrhinus mrigala. Responses of antioxidant enzymes, histological anomalies, and inorganic ion levels were studied. SOD activity in gill, liver, and kidney tissues was elevated in ciprofloxacin-exposed groups when compared with the control group. CAT activity was predominantly decreased in ciprofloxacin treated groups relative to the control group. GST activity in the ciprofloxacin treated groups was increased (except kidney tissues [Treatment I (1 mu g/L)], and gill tissues fifteenth day) significantly (p < .05). The LPO level was elevated in the ciprofloxacin treatment groups throughout the study period (except Treatment II (1.5 mu g/L) tenth day in kidney tissues). A series of histological anomalies were noticed in the gill, liver, and kidney tissues of the ciprofloxacin treated groups. Ciprofloxacin exposure caused a significant decrease of sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in the plasma of C. mrigala. A parallel among an imbalanced oxidative defense system, tissue structural changes, and alterations of plasma inorganic ions could be considered as a reliable biomarker for antibiotic toxicity study. This study could be a primary platform for further toxicity studies to understand the potential molecular impacts and adverse effects of ciprofloxacin on aquatic organisms. Nickel-Catalyzed N-Arylation of Fluoroalkylamines

The Ni-catalyzed N-arylation of beta-fluoroalkylamines with broad scope is reported for the first time. Use of the air-stable pre-catalyst (PAd2-DalPhos)Ni(o-tol)Cl allows for reactions to be conducted at room temperature (25 degrees C, NaOtBu), or by use of a commercially available dual-base system (100 degrees C, DBU/NaOTf), to circumvent decomposition of the N-(beta-fluoroalkyl)aniline product. The mild protocols disclosed herein feature broad (hetero)aryl (pseudo)halide scope (X=Cl, Br, I, and for the first time phenol-derived electrophiles), encompassing base-sensitive substrates and enantioretentive transformations, in a manner that is unmatched by any previously reported catalyst system.

Preparation of the novel g-C3N4 and porous polyimide supported hydrotalcite-like compounds materials for water organic contaminants removal

In this work, the novel graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) and porous polyimide (PI) supported calcined hydrotalcite-like compounds (g-C3N4@PI@CHTLcs) were synthesized by co-precipitation and hydrothermal synthesis method, and systematically characterized by physical and chemical methods. The composites showed layered structure and a high thermal stability, and performed well in adsorption of tetracycline (TL), 2, 4-dichlorophenol (DP) and glyphosate (GH). The action pH value was ranged from 7 to 9 for TL and GH, and 3-9 for DP, respectively. The adsorption of TL and DP by g-C3N4@PI@CHTLcs conforms to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. While for GH, the kinetic data fit well with pseudo-second-order model, indicating chemical adsorption via electrostatic interaction mechanism. Freundlich isothermal could better describe the adsorption process of TL, DP and GH. The maximum adsorption amounts of TL, DP and GH based on Langmuir isotherm model at 298 K were 231.1, 185.05 and 177.34 mg g(-1), respectively. The adsorption processes of TL, DP and GH were all endothermic and spontaneous, and showed excellent repeatability and stability in regeneration experiments. Additionally, the presence of chloride ion and humic acid (HA) showed no obvious effects on the adsorption process of organic contaminants. The diffusion mechanism of TL, DP and GH on the adsorption process was liquid membrane control. The adsorption mechanism might be the ion exchange between the layers of hydrotalcite, and the surface complexation and hydrogen bonding between various groups of PI and organic contaminants. The research showed that g-C3N4@PI@CHTLcs was effective in treatment of water containing various organic pollutants.

Melt-Moldable Copolymethacrylate/Titania Thermoreversible Polymer Networks with Shape Memory

This paper presents a hybrid network system composed of titania and a linear copolymer based on methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methacrylic acid (MA) monomers. The bonding between the carbonyl groups of the MMA and titania in this hybrid network system was inhibited via the addition of tetrabutylphosphonium chloride. Simultaneously, the titania components in the hybrid network system formed thermally reversible bonds with the carboxyl groups of the MA. The proposed hybrid copolymer not only melt molded and maintained a high titania dispersibility but also exhibited excellent 3D shape-memory characteristics. A bulk 3D body composed of multiple layers of the hybrid film achieved a fixed compressed state of approximately 41% that can be restored with a recovery rate of 81% via reheating.
