Evolution of magnetic properties of crystalline cobalt-iron boride nanoparticles via optimization of synthesis conditions using hydrous metal chlorides

Chemical synthesis of crystalline and nanoscale cobalt-iron metal boride powders was studied using hydrous metal chlorides and NaBH4. In situ measurement of sludge thickness in high-centrifugal force by optimized particle resistance normalization for wireless electrical resistance detector (WERD)

This study investigates the in situ sludge thickness of polymers in a real-scale horizontal decanter centrifuge using the optimized particle resistance normalization (OPRN) technique. Synthesis, characterization and desalination study of polyvinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate/cellulose acetate membranes integrated with surface modified zeolites

Novel mixed matrix membranes of polyvinyl chloride-co-vinyl acetate/cellulose acetate (PVCA/CA) infused with nano-particles of both pristine zeolite (p-zeolite) and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTS) functionalized zeolite (f-zeolite) were synthesized by dissolution casting method for desalination application. MMMs were then characterized using FTIR, SEM, contact angle and DMA analysis. FTIR and TGA analysis were also carried out for zeolite particles to confirm the surface functionalization. The loading effect of zeolite (1, 3 and 5 wt. %) and the impact of APTS functionalization on dispersion, morphological structure, thermo-mechanical properties and hydmphilicity were also analyzed. Desalination performance of the membranes was evaluated using 2000 ppm NaCl solution at 6 bar pressure. SEM analysis demonstrated that APTS functionalization improved the uniformity of the zeolite nano-particles in the membrane and a noticeable reduction in undesirable microscopic voids. Higher hydmphilicity was attained with the inclusion of f-zeolite nanoparticles, as confirmed by contact angle measurement analysis. It was found that the membrane infused with 5 wt. % of f-zeolite exhibited substantial improvements in storage modulus, glass transition temperature and cross-link density. Membranes infused with f-zeolite demonstrated enhanced transport mechanism without showing trade-off between water flux and salt rejection. In particular, inclusion of 5 wt. % f-zeolite, resulted in achieving the highest salt rejection of 99.56% with water flux increment of -24% in comparison to the neat PVCA/CA membrane. Finally, the membranes were tested for anti-fouling properties using flux recovery ratio test. Thus, the newly developed PVCA/CA membranes embedded with APTS f-zeolite can be exploited for high performance desalination applications.

Establishment of Pediatric Reference Intervals for Routine Laboratory Tests in Korean Population: A Retrospective Multicenter Analysis

Background: Reference intervals defined for adults or children of other ethnicities cannot be applied in the evaluation of Korean pediatric patients. Pediatric reference intervals are difficult to establish because children are in their growing stage and their physiology changes continuously. We aimed to establish reference intervals for routine laboratory tests for Korean pediatric patients through retrospective multicenter data analysis. Methods: Preoperative laboratory test results from 1,031 pediatric patients aged 0 month-18 years who underwent minor surgeries in four university hospitals were collected. Age- and sex-specific reference intervals for routine laboratory tests were defined based on the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) EP28-A3c guidelines. Results: The pediatric reference intervals determined in this study were different from existing adult reference intervals and pediatric reference intervals for other ethnicities. Most tests required age-specific partitioning, and some of those required sex-specific partitioning for at least one age-partitioned subgroup. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate, monocyte percentage, basophil percentage, activated partial thromboplastin time, glucose, cholesterol, albumin, bilirubin, chloride, and C-reactive protein did not show any difference between age- or sex-partitioned subgroups. Conclusions: We determined Korean pediatric reference intervals for hematology, coagulation, and chemistry tests by indirect sampling based on medical record data from multiple institutions. These reference intervals would be valuable for clinical evaluations in the Korean pediatric population.

This work describes the synthesis and coordination behavior of a new mixed-donor ligand PhC(NtBu)(2)SiC6H4PPh2 (1) containing both silylene and phosphine donor sites. Hyperchloremia in critically ill patients: association with outcomes and prediction using electronic health record data

Background Increased chloride in the context of intravenous fluid chloride load and serum chloride levels (hyperchloremia) have previously been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in select subpopulations of intensive care unit (ICU) patients (e.g patients with sepsis). Here, we study the general ICU population of the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database to corroborate these associations, and propose a supervised learning model for the prediction of hyperchloremia in ICU patients. Methods We assessed hyperchloremia and chloride load and their associations with several outcomes (ICU mortality, new acute kidney injury [AKI] by day 7, and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome [MODS] on day 7) using regression analysis. Four predictive supervised learning classifiers were trained to predict hyperchloremia using features representative of clinical records from the first 24h of adult ICU stays. Results Hyperchloremia was shown to have an independent association with increased odds of ICU mortality, new AKI by day 7, and MODS on day 7. High chloride load was also associated with increased odds of ICU mortality. Our best performing supervised learning model predicted second-day hyperchloremia with an AUC of 0.76 and a number needed to alert (NNA) of 7-a clinically-actionable rate. Conclusions Our results support the use of predictive models to aid clinicians in monitoring for and preventing hyperchloremia in high-risk patients and offers an opportunity to improve patient outcomes.

Effects of Saline Water Irrigation and Biochar Amendment on Okra Growth and Nutrient Leaching in Coastal Saline Soils

Excess soluble salts in the soil and irrigation water creates difficulties for plant growth and lowers nutrient availability in the soil. Organic ameliorants such as biochar are believed to be one of the effective treatments for soil improvement and salt stress alleviating. To access the response of different types of salt in irrigation water and bamboo biochar amendment on okra growth and nutrient leaching in coastal saline soils, both column and pot experiments were carried out from 2018 to 2019 in Nanjing, China. The experimental results suggested that okra growth and yield were reduced notably under the saline condition in contrast with the control treatment. Anthocyanin accumulation, which is a sign of growth stress, was decreased after the application of different types of salt. Furthermore, the application of different types of salt effectively increases malondialdehyde (MDA) content in sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and sodium chloride (NaCl) treatments at both 2.0 and 4.0 dS/m. Meanwhile, MDA was reduced in CaCl2 and MgCl2 treatments at both 2.0 and 4.0 dS/m. Nevertheless, bamboo biochar remarkably ameliorated okra seed germination, growth process, and yield due to salt stress. Besides, the leaching of nitrate, total nitrogen and total phosphorus is significantly reduced in the case of biochar application. In conclusion, our study suggested that bamboo biochar is one of the alternatives of ameliorant to improve the productivity of plants in coastal saline soils.
