Cellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable material. A bamboo cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane (LBL-NF-CS/BCM) was prepared with a combination of layer-by-layer assembly and spraying methods. The present study investigated ultraviolet-induced in situ gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) coupled with loopmediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for the point-of-care testing (POCT) of two major infectious pathogens, namely, Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium spp.). In the process, gold ions in a gold chloride (HAuCl4) solution were reduced using trisodium citrate (Na(3)Ct), a reducing agent, and upon UV illumination, red-colored AuNPs were produced in the presence of LAMP amplicons. To ensure POCT, we designed a portable device that contained arrays of reagent chambers and detection chambers. In the portable device, colorimetric reagents such as HAuCl4 and Na(3)Ct were contained in the reagent chambers; these reagents were subsequently transferred to the detection chambers where LAMP amplicons were present and thus allowed convenient sample delivery and multiplex detection. Owing to the high sensitivity of the in situ AuNPs, simplicity of portable device fabrication, and rapid colorimetric detection, we strongly believe that the fabricated portable device could serve as a kit for rapid POCT for instantaneous detection of infectious diseases, and could be readily usable at the bedside.

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) was used to treat several sandboxes filled with naturally occurring beach sand collected from Atlantic Beach, Florida. A surface-spray/percolation technique was used to treat these sandboxes where a relatively high-concentration bacteria solution and high-concentration calcium chloride/urea solutions were applied directly to the boxes’ surfaces. Several different treatment combinations were tested whereby bacterial optical density, bacteria/urea/calcium chloride volume relative to pore volume, and bacteria/urea/calcium chloride ratio were manipulated. When MICP constituent quantities were maximized to give the best erosion/crust-depth results, erodibility improvements began to approach what may be considered adequate erosive resistance. Further investigation is required to better classify this behavior more quantitatively.

In this work, we report a family of co-halogenated two-dimensional hybrid perovskites (2DHPs) based on phenethylammonium lead halogen ((PEA)(2)Pb(Cl/Br)(4)) in which the organic cation-site (PEA) is substituted with halogen at the para-site, namely the formation of 4-halophenethylamine (X-p-PEA) (X = Cl, Br; p: para-site). At the same time, we regulate the halogen-site of perovskites from lead-chloride perovskites (LCPs) to lead bromine perovskites (LBPs), achieving emission from white light to blue light. Therefore, the co-halogenation regulation strategy of organic cation-site and halogen-site can effectively regulate the photoluminescence wavelength and improve the PLQY. In this study, an ultrasonic and heat-assisted liquid-liquid extraction method combined with deep eutectic solvent-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction procedure was developed for the extraction of four phytosterols from cow milk butters. The analytes were determined by gas chromatography-flame ionization detector without derivatization. Initially, the sample was transferred into a falcon tube and placed into a sonication bath adjusted at 50 degrees C. Afterward, ethanol was mixed with the butter and the mixture was sonicated. The turbid solution was centrifuged and the sedimented phase was removed. Then, it was contacted with sodium hydroxide solution to remove the extracted fatty acids. The proposed method presented high enrichment factors (340-425) and extraction recoveries (68-85%), low limits of detection (0.51-1.3 ng g(-1)) and quantification (1.7-4.3 ng g(-1)) and acceptable relative standard deviations (<= 8.4%). The analytes contents of several cow milk butter samples were extracted and quantified with the developed method and the results were compared with ISO 23349. Ecological assessment was performed in different thermal springs located in the Ethiopian Rift Valley area: Gergedi, Sodere, Halaba, and Gara. We assessed the habitat conditions, physicochemical characteristics, and macroinvertebrate composition at 12 sampling sites in four thermal spring systems. The physicochemical properties of the water samples varied among the sampling stations. Temperature ranged from 38.5 to 90 degrees C among the 12 sites. Dissolved oxygen, which is essential to aquatic ecosystem normal functioning, was not detected at three sampling sites. An average of 109 macroinvertebrates were identified in three sampling campaigns. Relatively higher macroinvertebrate abundance 94 (86.2%) was registered in Gergedi than any other thermal spring sites. The macroinvertebrate abundance was 9 (8.3%) and 6 (5.5%) for the Gara and Sodere thermal springs. No macroinvertebrate communities were observed in all sites of Halaba thermal spring. From all macroinvertebrate groups, 82 (75.2%) were dipterans, 20 (18.4%) Oligochaeta, 5 (4.6%) Gastropoda, and the rest Hemipterans and Coleopterans, which comprises 2 (1.8%) individuals. Chironomidae was the dominant invertebrate taxa at all sites, and when the water temperature exceeds 42 degrees C, it becomes the only taxon in the thermal springs. Macroinvertebrates were absent in thermal springs where the water temperature is 52 degrees C or higher. Other diversity measures were not sensitive enough to discriminate sampling sites regardless of physicochemical variabilities except the richness and abundance. Water temperature, chloride, pH, and phosphate were identified as major determinants of macroinvertebrate richness in the Ethiopian Rift Valley region.

Simulations pending on the local metal ion concentration for current densities show that the modified model works; steric effects become important for large current densities and the formation of a resistive gel layer is responsible for the reduction of water at the electrode. We observe that the electrostatic potential resulting from space charge effects is not affected by implementing the different species sizes. Further research is needed to explore the applicability of industrial simulation tools.

Temperature-responsive polyion complex (PIC) micelles were prepared by using two diblock copolymers composed of a sulfobetaine chain (poly(sulfopropyldimethylammonium propylacrylamide), PSPP) and ionic chains (poly(sodium styrenesulfonate), PSSNa, or poly(3-(methacrylamido)propyltrimethylammonium chloride), PMAPTAC). Investigation of the ionic species dependence of the added salt in the collapse behavior of PIC micelles revealed that it was dependent on the anionic species, although no dependence on the cationic species was observed. Its effectiveness was in the order of I- > Br- > Cl- > F-, which is in agreement with the order of ionic species with strong structural destruction in the Hofmeister series. Heterogeneous and large PIC micelles were formed by the simple mixing method. They collapsed by salt addition and were reformed by the dialysis method to form uniform and smaller PIC micelles. This is considered to be because a uniform and smaller micelle is formed to reform in equilibrium state by dialysis. The temperature response of PIC micelles formed by the simple mixing method and PIC micelles reformed by dialysis showed nearly the same temperature-transmittance curves. These results indicate that the temperature response of PIC micelles is affected by the concentration rather than the hydrodynamic radius. Furthermore, the stability of PIC micelles was found to be affected by the concentration temperature (the temperature at the time of concentration).

In this study, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with a final temperature of 1000 degrees C at a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min and rapid pyrolysis are used to analyze the catalytic pyrolysis effect of CaCl2 and NiCl2 on lignite samples, mainly including pyrolysis reaction analysis and tar product distribution. Kinetic analysis reveals that the activation energy of pyrolysis is obviously reduced by catalysts, and comparatively, the most energy is needed at the second stage. The tar mainly contains substances with 5 to 16 carbon atoms, and aromatic hydrocarbons, as the main components, account for more than 90% of the tar composition. Ciprofloxacin drugs are a second-generation fluoroquinolone highly prescribed medication against various bacterial infections in human and aquaculture practices. These drugs are chemically designed to persist in the body long enough to achieve target objectives. Extensive usage has resulted in ciprofloxacin becoming a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment. Unfortunately, the ecotoxicological profiles for ciprofloxacin are scanty. This study was aimed to assess the ecotoxicity of ciprofloxacin at environmentally relevant concentrations (1 mu g/L, and 1.5 mu g/L) to a cultivable fish Cirrhinus mrigala. Responses of antioxidant enzymes, histological anomalies, and inorganic ion levels were studied. SOD activity in gill, liver, and kidney tissues was elevated in ciprofloxacin-exposed groups when compared with the control group. CAT activity was predominantly decreased in ciprofloxacin treated groups relative to the control group. GST activity in the ciprofloxacin treated groups was increased (except kidney tissues [Treatment I (1 mu g/L)], and gill tissues fifteenth day) significantly (p < .05). The LPO level was elevated in the ciprofloxacin treatment groups throughout the study period (except Treatment II (1.5 mu g/L) tenth day in kidney tissues). A series of histological anomalies were noticed in the gill, liver, and kidney tissues of the ciprofloxacin treated groups. Ciprofloxacin exposure caused a significant decrease of sodium, potassium, and chloride levels in the plasma of C. mrigala. A parallel among an imbalanced oxidative defense system, tissue structural changes, and alterations of plasma inorganic ions could be considered as a reliable biomarker for antibiotic toxicity study.
