In order to specifically image and dissolve a thrombus, we rationally designed a functionalized polymeric hybrid micelle (PHM) system self-assembled from amphiphilic polycaprolactone-polyethylenimine (PCL-PEI) and polycaprolactone-polyethylene glycol (PCL-PEG). Based on a biological component of thrombi, activated coagulation factor XIII (FXIIIa), which is responsible for fibrin crosslinking, we further developed FXIIIa-targeted near infrared imaging and thrombolytic nanoparticles, termed IR780/FPHM/LK NPs, through chemical conjugation of peptides to the system. In a ferric chloride (FeCl3)-induced mouse carotid thrombosis model, IR780/FPHM/LK NPs specifically targeted the thrombus and significantly enhanced the photoacoustic signal for an accurate diagnosis. When loaded with the fibrinolytic drug lumbrokinase (LK), FPHM remarkably dissociated the thrombus accompanied by an increase in the D-dimer level, a fibrin degradation product, and alleviation of fatal nonspecific hemorrhagic risk. Given its thrombus-specific imaging along with potent therapeutic activities, IR780/FPHM/LK NPs hold promise for developing nanotheranostic agents in preclinical thrombotic vascular disease models. Sustainable water management is key to achieving sustainable development goals. Increasing water consumption prompts industrial plants to implement water conservation projects (WCPs) and improve the utilization efficiency of water resources. In this paper, we develop an integrated graphical method for the implementation of water conservation projects by considering both water-saving targets and investment costs with or without government subsidies. First, cost-benefit analysis for different projects is carried out. The unit water saving cost diagram is employed to rank the priority of implementation of each project. Then, the project combination that meets the expected water-saving goal is determined via water-saving pinch analysis. Finally, the water conservation potential and cost-benefit of the optimal project combination are estimated using the marginal cost curve diagram. Two scenarios are considered for the proposed graphical approach: with and without government subsidies. A chlor-alkali/polyvinyl chloride complex is used as an illustrative case study. Background The use of cisplatin is limited by the development of nephrotoxicity, with an incidence approaching 30%. It is unclear if a risk prediction score can effectively predict the development of nephrotoxicity throughout all cycles of cisplatin therapy among outpatients. Methods Retrospective, observational study evaluating adult patients receiving cisplatin in outpatient infusion centers from January 2009 to November 2019 (n = 186). A risk prediction score consisting of patient age, cisplatin dose, hypertension, and serum albumin was calculated to predict the risk of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. Results The incidence of nephrotoxicity was 23.7% overall, with 8.1% of patients developing cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity after the first dose. Patients who developed nephrotoxicity had a higher mean risk prediction score compared to patients who did not have nephrotoxicity (4.0 +/- 2.0 versus 2.9 +/- 2.1, p = 0.004, respectively). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated each 1-point increase in the risk prediction score increased the odds of nephrotoxicity by 26.5% (OR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.02-1.57, p = 0.034). Presence of diabetes mellitus increased the odds of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity (OR 3.66; 95% CI: 1.43-9.33, p = 0.007), whereas receipt of greater than or equal to 1 liter of 0.9% sodium chloride was protective, decreasing the odds of developing nephrotoxicity by 25%. Conclusion By identifying patients at the highest risk of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity, providers can individualize risk reduction strategies. The use of a risk prediction model successfully predicted the risk of nephrotoxicity throughout all cycles of cisplatin in an outpatient setting.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Sesame (Sesamum indicum, L., Family: Pedaliaceae) is a notable folk medicine in Middle East, Asia and Africa. Many traditional and pharmacological studies have documented the unique nature of sesame oil (SO). SO has been reported to have many pharmacological effects related to the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of its components. Neuroinflammation and oxidative stress have been the predominant pathogenic events in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) which is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases. Aim of study: we aimed to explore the neuroprotective effect and the probable mechanisms of SO against aluminium chloride (AlCl3)-induced AD symptoms. Materials and methods: Rats were treated daily with AlCl3 (100 mg/kg/i.p.) either alone or with SO (two different doses) for six weeks. Behavioral (Open-field and Morris water maze tests), histopathological, and biochemical examinations were used to evaluate the neuroprotective effect and the underlying mechanisms of SO against AlCl3-induced AD symptoms. Results: Our results indicated that SO significantly improved learning and memory impairments induced by AlCl3. Indeed, SO treatment significantly restored the elevated level of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and amyloid beta (A beta) overexpression. Moreover, AlCl3 treatment afforded histopathological changes, increase the expression of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) in addition to mitigation of oxidative stress status in the brain. SO abolished all these abnormalities. Meanwhile, AlCl3 induced activation of p38 mitogenactivated protein kinase (p38MAPK) and decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) which were inhibited by SO. Furthermore, SO administration modulated the expression of the peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B). Conclusions: In conclusion, the neuroprotective effect of SO involved the modulation of different mechanisms targeting oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cognitive functions. SO may modulate different molecular targets involved in AD pathogenesis by alterations of NF-kappa B/p38MAPK/BDNF/PPAR-gamma signalling and this may be attributed to the synergistic effect of their active components.

Ph-Si(3)minCl has a larger gamma(cmc) value, resulting from the introduction of the phenyldimethy siloxy unit (pi-pi stacking interaction). The beta values of Vi-Si(3)minCl and Ph-Si(3)minCl increase with the increase in temperature, which is attributed to the intermolecular interaction which hinders the association of Cl- with the imidazolium ring and confirmed by 2D NOESY NMR.
