Ozonolysis of unsaturated organic species with water produces a-hydroxyalkylhydroperoxides (alpha-HHs), which are reactive intermediates that lead to the formation of H2O2 and multifunctionalized species in atmospheric condensed phases. Here, we report temperaturedependent rate coefficients (k) for the aqueous-phase decomposition of alpha-terpineol alpha-HHs at 283-318 K and terpinen-4-ol alpha a-HHs at 313-328 K. The temporal profiles of alpha-HH signals, detected as chloride adducts by negative-ion electrospray mass spectrometry, showed single-exponential decay, and the derived first-order k for alpha-HH decomposition increased as temperature increased, e.g., k(288 K) = (4.7 +/- 0.2) X 10(-5), k(298 K) = (1.5 +/- 0.4) X 10(-4), k(308 K) = (3.4 +/- 0.9) X 10(-4), k(318 K) (1.0 +/- 0.2) X 10(-3) s(-1) for alpha-terpineol alpha-HHs at pH 6.1. Arrhenius plot analysis yielded activation energies of 17.9 +/- 0.7 (pH 6.1) and 17.1 +/- 0.2 kcal mol(-1) (pH 6.2) for the decomposition of alpha-terpineol and terpinen-4-ol alpha-HHs, respectively. Activation energies of 18.6 +/- 0.2 and 19.2 +/- 0.5 kcal mol(-1) were also obtained for the decomposition of alpha-terpineol alpha-HHs in acidified water at pH 5.3 and 4.5, respectively. Theoretical kinetic and thermodynamic calculations confirmed that both water-catalyzed and proton-catalyzed mechanisms play important roles in the decomposition of these alpha-HHs. The relatively strong temperature dependence of k suggests that the lifetime of these alpha-HHs in aqueous phases (e.g., aqueous aerosols, fog, cloud droplets, wet films) is controlled not only by the water content and pH but also by the temperature of these media.

This work aimed to investigate the effects of sodium chloride (NaCl), calcium chloride (CaCl2), naphthenic acids, and sulfur compounds, which can be responsible for corrosion in oil refineries due to the rheological and physical properties of crude oils. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to predict the corrosion behavior based on the velocity profiles, shear stress, the friction factor, and the solid deposition rate of iron(II) chloride (FeCl2), iron(II) acetate (Fe(CH3COO)(2)), and iron sulfide (FeS) along the elbow. The numerical results proved that the corrosion locations are focused at certain regions, especially the elbow extrados wall outlet. The numerical results provide more solutions to avoid corrosion and improve the operational safety of the refinery.

Hydrochloric acid doped poly (p-nitroaniline -co- o-aminophenol) [PpNAoAP] is synthesized via oxidative polymerization method using ferric chloride as an initiator and PEG200 as a soft template. Purpose: In the present study, we attempted to explore the role of chloride channel 3 (CLC-3) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and its related mechanism. Methods: First, the expression level of CLC-3 in CRC tumor tissues and cell lines were measured by RTqPCR, immunohistochemistry or western blot analysis. CLC-3 expression knockdown in CRC cells was achieved by siRNA transfection. The effect of CLC-3 silence on cell viability, cell cycle, invasion and migration of CRC was estimated by CCK8, flow cytometry based cell cycle assay, and transwell assay, respectively. In order to investigate whether Wnt/beta-catenin signaling was perturbed by CLC-3 knock down, CLC-3 knockdown cells were treated with pathway activator LiCl, followed by the measurement of the expressions of pathway related genes, cell viability, cell cycle, metastasis ability. Results: The expression of CLC-3 was gradually increased from normal adjacent tissues to CRC tumor tissues, and the increase in tumor tissues was related to TNM stages. CLC-3 was overexpressed in four CRC cell lines (HCT116, SW480, LoVo and SW620), compared with NCM460 cells. CLC-3 knockdown significantly reduced cell proliferation, invasion and migration ability, reflected by declined cell viability, arrested G0/G1 cell cycle, decreased invasion and migration ability. In contrast, the declined cell proliferation, invasion and migration of LoVo and SW620 cells induced by CLC-3 knockdown were reversed by the addition of Wnt/beta-catenin activator LiCl. Conclusion: CLC-3 contributed to the CRC development and metastasis through Wnt/beta-catenin signaling pathway. CLC-3 could be proposed as the candidate target for CRC treatment. It is of great importance to obtain the accurate thermal properties of molten salts over the entire operating temperature for system design in concentrated solar power or other thermal storage systems. In this work, we explore size effects on density, viscosity and thermal conductivity predictions of molten nitrate and chloride salts by molecular dynamics. Equilibrium molecular dynamics and reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics methods are applied to calculate thermal conductivities of NaNO3 and NaCl regarding different simulation cell sizes at the specific temperatures to study size effects on thermal conductivity predictions of melts. The results show that the size effects are neglected on density and viscosity predictions while a linear positive relationship between 1/lambda and 1/L-z is found in the reverse nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method. Through analyzing the phenomenon from a view of microstructure, phonon-phonon-scattering rates are found to be the key factors. The influences of temperature and particle species on size effects are further discussed. Subsequently, appropriate simulation cell sizes are selected for NaNO3, KNO3 and Hitec salt, and the calculated thermal properties are in good agreement with the experimental values. The mean relative errors and fitting formula for density, thermal conductivity, and viscosity for the three salts are also obtained.

Aims: EMT is the process by which a polarized epithelial cell undergoes several changes leading to highly invasive and fibroblast-like morphology. It has been described that miR-375 is inversely associated with EMT in cancerous patients and can effectively inhibit invasion and migration of tumor cells. Here, we investigate whether miR-375 mimic delivered by tumor-derived exosomes could reverse EMT process. Main methods: The exosomes were isolated from HT-29 and SW480. Subsequently, exosomes were loaded with miR-375-3p mimic applying modified calcium chloride method. Quantitative real-time PCR was used for evaluation of the loading efficiency of miR-375 mimic in the exosomes. The effects of miR-375 loaded tumor exosomes (TEXomiR) on EMT process investigated using flow cytometry, cell morphology, and invasion and migration assay. Key findings: The in vitro results showed that the tumor derived exosomes can efficiently deliver miR-375 mimic to reduce the expression of beta-catenin, vimentin, ZEB1, and snail. In contrast, TEXomiR significantly increased the expression of E- cadherin in EMT process. Furthermore, the migration and invasion abilities of HT-29 and SW480 cells were inhibited by TEXomiR. The expression of CD44 and CD133 are increased in EMT process. Flow cytometry evaluation demonstrated that treatment with TEXomiR significantly decreased the expression of CD44 and CD133 in SW480 cell line. Significance: Our results imply that colon cancer cells-derived exosomes could be used as an effective nonvehicle to deliver miR-375-3p mimic. Moreover, TEXomiR may be a potent therapeutic agent for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

The combined effects of external carbonation and internal chloride transport are the main reasons leading to the degradation of concrete structures manufactured with sea sand. To evaluate the degradation process of sea-sand concrete structures, a mathematical model for describing the redistribution of internal chlorides in sea-sand concrete exposed to atmospheric carbonation was proposed in this study. In the proposed model, changes in porosity, saturation degree, and the release of bound chlorides under the carbonation were considered. The numerical simulation of proposed model was executed by COMSOL software in a concrete model generated with random aggregates, which is verified to fit well with the experimental data obtained from a case study. In the modelling results, the chloride concentration in pore solution was decreased with the deeper depth after redistribution. However, on the chloride profile with the unit of wt% of concrete, a ‘pseudo enrichment’ of chlorides content was found after chloride redistribution and verified to be caused by the unit conversion. Non-leaching antibacterial coatings through quaternary ammonium salts containing polymers were successfully produced in a facile way to provide infection resistant surfaces against multi drug resistant bacteria such as B. licheniformis. In order to do so, a series of random copolymers of styrene (S) and vinyl benzyl chloride (VBC) were synthesized by free radical polymerization technique and subsequently, VBC (V) was functionalized with N,N-dimethylhexadecylamine to introduce quaternary ammonium (QA) salts in the backbone of the copolymers. The copolymers showed an excellent film forming ability, thereby providing an ultrathin coating on various substrates such as metal (stainless steel), glass, polyethylene and polystyrene, as observed by SEM.The coatings were found to be uniform, non leachable in aqueous medium and exhibit good adhesion to various substrates. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of the non-leachable coating of random copolymers were screened against B. licheniformis. Among, the copolymer containing 75% quaternized VBC (75VSQA) having 16-C long alkyl chain was found to show maximum antibacterial and antibiofilm activity owing to an appropriate hydrophobic /hydrophilic balance. Their non-leachable antibacterial and antibiofim activity make these coatings suitable for many applications, e.g. marine paints, textile/hospital coatings etc.
