Reinforced concrete (RC) structures in cold regions are subjected to double attacks of chloride erosion and freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs), accelerating the deterioration of concrete performance. Here, a multi-phase mesoscopic numerical model is proposed to systematic study the diffusion mechanism of chloride under the FTCs. Unlike most of existing models, the interface transition zone (ITZ) with random thickness is taken into account in the proposed concrete meso-structure. Moreover, the relationship between FTCs damage and chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete is deduced from the classical Aas-Jakobsen S-N equation. The reliability of the proposed model is further verified by compared with the third-party experiments data. It is evident from the proposed model that FTCs can promote the chloride diffusion. More importantly, this promoting effect is obvious when the number of FTCs is close to the limit number of FTCs. Specially, the mechanism of ITZ promoting the chloride diffusion is revealed by simulating the chloride diffusion trajectories in concrete meso-structure. Interestingly, despite the existence of FTCs in cold regions, chloride is diffused more rapidly in the tropical regions. Our findings reveal previously ignored fundamental aspects of the chloride diffusion mechanism under FTCs, and provide insights for the durability prediction of RC structures. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Perovskite solar cells have emerged as a promising next-generation electrical power generating tool. However, imperfections in perovskite films are one of the crucial factors preventing the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Passivation has proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the density of defect states in perovskite crystals and inhibit ion migration. Although significant work on chloride ion and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) has shown that the additives are able to passivate different types of trap defects, systematic studies on the effects of DMF and HCl on perovskite crystallization when used in conjunction with each other are elusive. Here, we systematically investigated the synergistic effect of DMF and hydrochloric acid (HCl) on methylammonium (MA(+))-based perovskite films with the two-step spin-coating method. As a Lewis base, DMF coordinates well with Pb2+ to facilitate a decrease in the number of defects, thereby improving the carrier separation and transport, while HCl improves the overall perovskite film morphology. Addition of 20 mu L HCl/20 mu L DMF to 10 mL of methylammonium iodide/isopropyl alcohol solution afforded ca. 500 nm thick perovskite films with no observable defects within the grains. The process allowed fabrication of devices with an active area of 0.16 cm(2), which produced power conversion efficiencies up to 18.37% with minimal hysteresis.

Corrosion induced failure of buried ferrous pipelines causes significant economic losses to the world. Many of the existing buried water pipelines are made of ductile iron in most of the developed countries. Literature shows that the research on the corrosion-induced degradation assessments of ductile iron pipelines is limited and mostly deals with the physical deterioration i. e., loss of wall thickness determined by short-term research. This paper addresses this gap and presents a comparatively long-term study on the corrosion and its subsequent effect on the composition and nanomechanical properties of buried ductile iron pipelines in the accelerated corrosive environment. For experimentation, ductile iron specimens were immersed in the acidic simulated soil solution for 365 days. Physical deterioration assessment over the time was carried out in terms of corrosion rates measured at intervals of 180 and 365 days. A significant change in the percentage composition of key elements and phases were quantified. Furthermore, the mechanical properties of the grains were found to be considerably reduced after 365 days of immersion in the acidic environment by the nanoindentation technique. The results revealed an alarming increase of structural degradation at nano scale for some of the grains due to chloride induced localised corrosion. The significance of the current research is its in-depth analysis of the corrosion-induced degradation of ductile iron pipes which enhances the knowledge related to the failure of these pipelines.

Inspired of the synergistic effect of the antifouling performance of hydrophilic substance and the self-cleaning function of low surface energy material, we designed and synthesized a kind of macromolecule amphiphilic graft copolymer by the free radical polymerization, which used polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as the main chains, poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) as the hydrophilic segment and trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) as the low surface energy segment. Then, the amphiphilic PVC-g-PPEGMA/PTFEMA graft copolymer membrane was successfully prepared via surface segregation through the phase inversion process and was further optimized via the forced self-assembly through annealing treatments. The results showed that the PPEGMA chain segments migrated on the membrane surface which driven the PTFEMA chain segments to enrich on the membrane surface during the annealing process, meanwhile, annealing treatment promoted the local microphase separation and improved the mean pore size and the porosity. Based on the synergistic effect of hydrophilic and low surface energy segments, the PVC-g-PPEGMA/PTFEMA graft copolymer membrane obtained the maximum pure water flux of 510.69 +/- 16.28 L . m(-2). h(-1), flux recovery rate of 91.49% and rejection rate of 99.31% in the BSA filtration process, which also revealed significantly antifouling properties. More importantly, the PVC-g-PPEGMA/PTFEMA copolymer membrane exhibited long-time hydrophilic stability, which could extend its potential service life.

When soluble particles are present in the filter cake and are exposed to fine water droplets throughout the process, the soluble particles dissolve. This can lead to a restructuring of the filter cake and the penetration of particles into the filter medium. This behavior in gas cleaning systems and its possible influence on the structure of the cake and pressure drop across the filter has not yet been systematically investigated. The experiments presented in this work show how soluble filter cakes restructure on hydrophobic glass fiber media after being exposed to water droplets at a filtration velocity of 3.5 cm s(-1). Sodium chloride, potassium chloride and potassium sulfate particulate matter is separated from a dry air stream and subsequently exposed to different amounts of water droplets or a relative humidity above 85% with no liquid droplets present. The effect soluble species have on the operational behavior are observed by recording the pressure drop over the filter medium. Additionally, micrographs with a scanning electron microscope visualize the structural changes of the filter cakes. In combination with the pressure drop recordings, the images are used to analyze the restructuring of the particles on the filter when the salt is exposed to the liquid or high relative humidity only.

Conductive, self-healing, and adhesive hydrogels are of great significance in wearable electronic devices. The most important properties of conductive self-healing hydrogels are the efficient recovery of both electrical and mechanical properties at room temperature and prolonged durability. In this work, we developed a novel double-network hydrogel consisting of poly(4-styrene sulfonate-co-methyl-uracil-imidazolium) chloride (PSS-MUI), gelatin, and ferric ions (Fe3+). Here, the MUI serves as a supramolecular crosslinker, while ferric ions act as ionic crosslinkers between gelatin and PSS functional groups. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent stretchability and outstanding ionic conductivity. The reversible nature of dynamic hydrogen bonding and ionic and metal coordination interactions rendered the hydrogel selfhealing ability, strong adhesion, and rapid electrical performance recovery. Variation in the Fe3+ concentration proved to influence the time window of hydrogel processability and allowed tuning the hydrogel mechanical and ion-conducting properties. The optimal Fe3+ ion concentration for use in a processable, ion-conducting hydrogel was found to be 2 wt %. During repeated stretching, the hydrogel showed only small changes in its electrical resistance. An electric circuit was successfully assembled onto a flexible polyurethane (PU) substrate where the power supply, light-emitting diode, and resistor were connected with the hydrogel, serving as a conductive wire. Upon breakage of the wire, simple extrusion of the hydrogel precursor into the gap yielded instant repair of the circuit. Thus, the hydrogel demonstrated suitability for use in flexible electronic devices.

Antimicrobial cationic amphiphiles have broad-spectrum activity, and microbes do not readily develop resistance to these agents, highlighting their clinical and industrial potential. Cationic amphiphiles perturb the integrity of membranes leading to cell death, and the lack of discrimination between microbial and mammalian plasma membranes is thought to be one of the main barriers of using these agents for the treatment of systemic infections. Here, we describe the synthesis and study of 20 antimicrobial cationic amphiphiles that are derivatives of the aminoglycoside nebramine with different numbers of alkyl chain ethers that differ in length and degree of unsaturation. We determined antifungal activities and evaluated hemoglobin release from red blood cells as a measure of membrane selectivity and analyzed how serum influences these activities. Microscopic images revealed morphological transformations of red blood cells from the normal double-disc shape to empty ghost cells upon treatment with the cationic amphiphiles. Antifungal activity, hemolysis, and morphological changes in red blood cells decreased as the percentage of serum in the culture medium was increased. In images of red blood cells treated with fluorescently labeled amphiphilic nebramine probes, the accumulation of the cationic amphiphiles in the membranes decreased as serum concentration increased. This suggests that, in addition to its known effect of preventing the deformability of red blood cells, serum prevents interactions between cationic amphiphiles and the plasma membrane. The results of this study indicate that biological activities of cationic amphiphiles are abrogated in serum. Thus, these agents are suitable for external and industrial uses but probably not for effective treatment of systemic infections.

Biogas slurry retention is a critical problem that cannot be solved by using the reuse method. Therefore, a new approach was taken to compensate for the shortcomings in the reuse method. In this study, after ammonia stripping, the ammonia nitrogen concentration in the stripped biogas slurry (SBS) still cannot reach the effluent standard (80 mg/L), so a variety of processes were needed to treat the SBS. Poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) and rice husk biochar (B) were used to pretreat SBS. The effect of different pretreatments on the COD value, ammonia nitrogen concentration, turbidity, total phosphorus (TP), and other indicators was investigated. After different pre-treatments by PAC and biochar, the pretreated SBS was filtered by a ceramic membrane, and the indicators of SBS were removed in the next step. After adding PAC and biochar together, ammonia nitrogen concentration was decreased to 68.09 mg/L, with a removal rate of 63%. The total phosphorus (TP) was also decreased, and its removal rate reached 92.5%. When the SBS was pretreated with PAC and biochar and then filtered through a ceramic membrane under different operating pressures, the removal rates of COD, total nitrogen (TN), turbidity, and suspended solids (SS) reached 81%, 88%, 96%, and 99% respectively. Moreover, by increasing the pressure from 0.1 to 0.3 MPa, the membrane flux was improved from 45 to 100.6 L/m(2).h. This study proves that the combined pre-treatments of PAC and biochar can comprehensively remove various indicators from SBS while ensuring membrane flux during the membrane filtration process.
