Completely or partially stable polychloral [25154-92-1] was obtained by anionic cryotachensic polymerization of Cl3CCHO in the presence of alkylating or acylating agents, e.g. Me2SO4 [77-78-1]. Stabilization was also effected by polymerization using salts with easily decomposed cations as anionic initiators. Sulfonium salts, e.g. Me3S+Cl [3086-29-1] and [Me2S+CH2Ph]Br [14182-15-1], and iodonium salts, e.g. Ph2I+Cl [1483-72-3], were effective although quant. stabilization was not achieved. Polychloral with improved stability was also obtained using certain amide acetals, e.g. Me2NCH(OMe)2 [4637-24-5], as initiators.

Sanin, P. I. published the artcileInteraction of antiwear additives with friction surfaces, Product Details of C5H10Cl3O3P, the publication is Wear (1974), 30(2), 249-56, database is CAplus.

A study of the effects of phosphonic acid esters on frictional wear under diverse loads and sliding speeds indicated that the efficiency of such phosphonates (I) as antiwear additives depends on their structure and varies with the frictional modes. Principal I were grouped as esters which are ineffective under both high and low loads (esters with no Cl atoms); esters effective under both high and low loads (CCl3-group containing esters); and esters effective under high or low loads. The interaction of I with steel has been studied. Dissimilarity in the efficiency of esters as lubricating oil additives is explained by their different adsorption and chem. actions.

Lashkhi, V. L. published the artcileAntiwear action of organophosphorus and chloroorganophosphorus compounds in lubricating oils, Category: chlorides-buliding-blocks, the publication is Khimiya i Tekhnologiya Topliv i Masel (1975), 47-50, database is CAplus.

Antiwear additives with high thermal adsorption properties, such as CCl3(CH2)6PO(OEt)2 [53280-04-9] were effective for friction at low contact loads and low sliding rates. Others, such as CCl3PO(OEt)2 [866-23-9], PhPO(OCH2CCl3)2 [18255-20-4], and CCl3PO(OBu)2 [5887-93-4], forming strong superficial films, were effective for high sp. loads and high velocities. The additive CCl3C6H4PO(OEt)2 [28652-49-5], had simultaneously high thermal adsorption and gave strong films. The higher the work function of the metal electron, the higher was the efficiency of the additive. The esters of phosphonic acids, with or without Cl and having low chem. activity for a metal, were ineffective antiwear additives.

Furfural has been produced in 53% isolated yield from D-xylose within an aqueous HCl-1,2-dichloroethane biphasic reaction mixture using benzyltributylammonium chloride (BTBAC) as a phase transfer catalyst. The use of BTBAC noticeably improved the yield of furfural compared to that in the control reaction. The reaction was optimized on the reaction temperature, duration, concentration of HCl, and the loading of BTBAC. Furfural and 5-(chloromethyl)furfural (CMF) have also been coproduced from a mixture of pentose and hexose sugars. Under optimized conditions (100°C, 3 h, 20.2% HCl, 10 wt% BTBAC), CMF and furfural were isolated in 17% and 53% yield, resp., from a mixture of glucose and xylose. In addition, levulinic acid was isolated from the aqueous layer in 31% yield.

Dinuclear metal terpyridine (M-tpy; M = Ru, Os, Fe, and Co) complexes with a photochromic dithienylethene bridge were designed and synthesized through either a convergent or a divergent approach. The open forms of the complexes containing RuII and FeII centers are inert to UV photoirradiation but could be cyclized electrochem. as revealed by a cyclic voltammetric study. On the contrary, the CoII complex underwent efficient photochem. but not electrochem. cyclization. The corresponding OsII complex was neither photochromic nor electrochromic.

There is continuing interest in the design and synthesis of functional materials for applications in mol. electronics and information storage. Of particular interest are systems that can provide multiple means for controlling transport through well-defined and stable electronic and/or redox states. The authors report herein the synthesis and characterization of a system containing transition-metal complexes along with dithienylethene (DTE) units so as to achieve photo and redox control of transport. A facile synthetic methodol. was developed to assemble and couple metal terpyridine (M-tpy) complexes with the photochromic DTE unit in a linear structure with M-DTE-M or DTE-M-DTE arrangements, with emphasis on the latter series. The photochromic properties of these assemblies were examined by monitoring the changes in their UV/visible spectra upon irradiation at specific wavelengths capable of triggering the open/closed isomerization in the DTE units. Their electrochromic properties were studied via cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis experiments Complexes 10 (PhDTE-Fe-DTEPh) and 11 (PhDTE-Co-DTEPh) with phenyl-ending groups are both photochromic and electrochromic, so they represent excellent candidates for further elaborations. The Fe(II)-containing complex 8 (ClDTE-Fe-DTECl) with chloride-ending groups was photochromically inactive but could undergo the electrochem. induced open-to-closed isomerization. On the contrary, the electrochromically inactive complex 9 (ClDTE-Co-DTECl) underwent cyclization under UV irradiation
