Chalcones, 2-phenylamino-(4′-chlorophenylamino)-6-[4′-{3″-(phenyl/substituted phenyl)-2″-propenon-1″-yl}phenylamino]-s-triazine I [R = C6H5, 3-BrC6H4, 4-FC6H4, 3-PhOC6H4, 3-MeOC6H4] have been prepared from ketones on treatment with different aldehydes. These chalcones I on cyclization with malononitrile in the presence of ammonium acetate give cyanopyridines II.
