(EtO)2P(O)CCl3 and Me3SiCl were converted by a three-step sequence beginning with BuLi into α-phosphorylated α-silylated α-substituted carbanions, (EtO)2P(O)CRLiSiMe3 [I; R = Pr, C5H11, C7H15, C12H25, CH:CH2, crotyl, ClCH2(CH2)n, n = 2,3]. I reacts with Et formate in the presence of Me3SiCl to give transient silylated acetals, (EtO)2P(O)CR(SiMe3)CH(OEt)(OTMS), which readily undergo acid hydrolysis to afford 1-formylalkylphosphonates, (EtO)2P(O)CHRCHO, in good yield.
