There is continuing interest in the design and synthesis of functional materials for applications in mol. electronics and information storage. Of particular interest are systems that can provide multiple means for controlling transport through well-defined and stable electronic and/or redox states. The authors report herein the synthesis and characterization of a system containing transition-metal complexes along with dithienylethene (DTE) units so as to achieve photo and redox control of transport. A facile synthetic methodol. was developed to assemble and couple metal terpyridine (M-tpy) complexes with the photochromic DTE unit in a linear structure with M-DTE-M or DTE-M-DTE arrangements, with emphasis on the latter series. The photochromic properties of these assemblies were examined by monitoring the changes in their UV/visible spectra upon irradiation at specific wavelengths capable of triggering the open/closed isomerization in the DTE units. Their electrochromic properties were studied via cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis experiments Complexes 10 (PhDTE-Fe-DTEPh) and 11 (PhDTE-Co-DTEPh) with phenyl-ending groups are both photochromic and electrochromic, so they represent excellent candidates for further elaborations. The Fe(II)-containing complex 8 (ClDTE-Fe-DTECl) with chloride-ending groups was photochromically inactive but could undergo the electrochem. induced open-to-closed isomerization. In summary, we have prepared new mol. constructs composed of electron-donating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and p-extended-TTF derivatives covalently connected to electron-accepting pyrrolidino[3,4:1,2] fullerene through photo-switchable dithienylethene bridges. By exposure to a light stimulus the bridge can be interconverted between a decoupled ring-open and a coupled ring-closed form and, hence, enables external control of electronic communication between the donor and acceptor units. In the resulting architectures, incoming photons give rise to efficient charge separation and, furthermore, allow modulation of the lifetimes of the charge-separated states over two orders of magnitude by variation of their wavelength. The photoresponsive, dynamic bridge provides a means for (self-)regulation through a reversible activation-deactivation mechanism for solar energy conversion in artificial photosynthetic systems.

In this work, a transition-metal free approach for the construction of primary aromatic amines R/R1NH2 (R = 4-chlorophenyl, 2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl, naphthalen-2-yl, etc.)/(R1 = Ph, 4-methylphenyl, 4-hydroxyphenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 2-cyanophenyl) from aryl boronic acids RB(OH)2 and esters R1Bpin with N-Boc-O-tosylhydroxylamine as an amine surrogate was reported. Bench stable TsONHBoc is easy to use and it produces a non-interfering water-soluble byproduct. The protocol is operative for both electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl boronic acids under acidic conditions, wherein, the former arenes affords a better yield of the desired product. Even, sterically hindered and halogenated substrates are easily amenable under this reaction condition. The current protocol can be scaled up to produce gram-scale primary aromatic amines.
