Starting from inexpensive and easily accessible nitroarenes or amines and aqueous formaldehyde or aldehydes in the presence of formic acid, this cost-efficient reductive amination protocol allows the synthesis of various N-methyl- and N-alkylamines, amino acid derivatives, and existing drug mols.
