The polymerization of terthiophene to obtain an alkene bridged α,α-coupled sexithiophene polymer, was controlled by light; i.e., the electropolymerizability of the bis-terthiophene monomer is switched off and on upon illumination with UV and visible light, resp. The system comprises both bis-terthiophene and photochromic dithienylethene units. The presence of a light-switchable unit allows on-off switching of the electropolymerization of the monomer with light. The incorporation of dithienylethene in the backbone increases dramatically the homogeneity of the polymer formed (i.e., only sexithiophene units are formed). The films are robust and fully retain electrochromism as was demonstrated through cyclic voltammetry while spatial control (patterning) is readily achieved by applying simple optical masking techniques.
