A variety of substituted diarylsulfones RSO2R1 [R = R1 = 4-PhC6H4, 4-MeC6H4, 2-Br-4-MeOC6H3, 2-thienyl, etc.; R = 4-MeC6H4, 4-ClC6H4, 3,4-Me2C6H3, etc., R1 = 2-MeC6H4, 2-ClC6H4, 2,3-Me2C6H3, etc.] could be synthesized from simple arenes and 3CdSO4·xH2O in the presence of P2O5 under high-speed ball milling.
