The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics that were exposed to air (A-PE-MPs), water (W-PE-MPs) and soil (S-PE-MPs) environments for a long time were investigated with batch experiments in this study. FT-IR and GC-MS analysis confirmed that phthalates (PAEs) were released from PE microplastics after exposure to UV light. When exposed to water and soil environments, PE microplastics were colonized by microorganisms and biofilms were formed on their surface. Compared with virgin microplastics (V-PE-MPs), the environment-exposed microplastics possessed higher adsorption and stabilization capacity for Cu (II) and TC. The adsorption isotherm data of V-PE-MPs and A-PE-MPs were well fitted by Freundlich model, whilst the adsorption by W-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs were better described by Langmuir model. The Boyd equation used in kinetic experiments revealed that V-PE-MPs and A-PE-MPs were additionally affected by intra-particle diffusion compared with W-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs. The glycosyl composition analysis suggested that the higher adsorption capacities of S-PE-MPs than W-PE-MPs could relate to the different components of extracellular polysaccharides in biofilms. Moreover, density functional theory further verified that Cu(II) and PAE adsorption on microplastics could be enhanced by the generation of Cu-PAE and Cu-PAE-TC complexes. In addition dissolved organic matter exerted opposite effects on the adsorption onto A-PE-MPs and S-PE-MPs due to their different affinity for Cu(II), TC and DOM. This study demonstrated that the contribution of microplastics to heavy metal and antibiotic migration could be affected by the way they exposed to environments.

Although 3-azoindoles have recently emerged as an appealing family of photoswitch molecules, the synthesis of such compounds has been poorly covered in the literature. Herein a high-yielding and operationally simple protocol is reported allowing the synthesis of 3-azoindoles, featuring important steric hindrance around the azo motif. Remarkably, this C-H coupling is characterized by excellent atom economy and occurs under metal-free conditions, at room temperature, and within few minutes, delivering the expected products in excellent yields (quantitatively in most of the cases). Accordingly, a library of new molecules, with potential applications as photochromic compounds, is prepared.

Ln(NO3)(3)center dot nH(2)O reacted with 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid (2,4-HDCB) and NaOH under solvothermal conditions of water and ethanol to yield four lanthanide-organic coordination polymers (CPs) [Eu(2,4-DCB)(3)(CH3CH2OH)(2)] (1) and [Ln(2,4-DCB)(3)(H2O)] [Ln = Gd (2), Tb (3), Dy (4)]. The second ligand 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bpy) was introduced into the above reaction systems to provide four new lanthanide-organic CPs [Ln(2)(2,4-DCB)(6)(4,4′-bpy)(H2O)(2)] [Ln = Eu (5), Gd (6), Tb (7), Dy (8)]. Single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that CPs 1 and 2 possess similar one-dimensional (1D) structures, and CPs 2-4 and 5-8 are isostructural, respectively. In 1-4, the 2,4-DCB anions bridge the Ln(III) ions to form a 1D chain. In 5-8, six 2,4-DCB anions link two Ln(III) ions into a binuclear Ln(2)(2,4-DCB)(6) unit, and the Ln(2)(2,4-DCB)(6) units are further connected by the 4,4′-bpy co-ligands to generate a 1D chain. A series of palladium N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), complexes C1-C5, bearing dianisole backbones and substituted N-aryl moieties have been synthesized and characterized. The electronic effect as well as the steric environment of the NHC ligands has been assessed. The synthesized palladium complexes were applied for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions under aerobic conditions. The relationship between the catalytic structure and catalytic performance was then extensively investigated. Upon optimizing the reaction conditions, the C4 was found to be highly efficient to catalyze the cross-coupling of (hetero)aryl chlorides with (hetero)arylboronic acids at a 0.1 mol % palladium loading.

Catalytic transformation of alcohols via metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions is very important, but it typically relies on a multistep procedure. We here report a dynamic kinetic cross-coupling approach for the direct functionalization of alcohols. The feasibility of this strategy is demonstrated by a nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile arylation reaction of benzyl alcohols with (hetero)aryl electrophiles. The reaction proceeds with a broad substrate scope of both coupling partners. The electron-rich, electron-poor, and ortho-/meta-/para-substituted (hetero)aryl electrophiles (e.g., Ar-OTf, Ar-I, Ar-Br, and inert Ar-Cl) all coupled well. Most of the functionalities, including aldehyde, ketone, amide, ester, nitrile, sulfone, furan, thiophene, benzothiophene, pyridine, quinolone, Ar-SiMe3, Ar-Bpin, and Ar-SnBu3, were tolerated. The dynamic nature of this method enables the direct arylation of benzylic alcohol in the presence of various nucleophilic groups, including nonactivated primary/secondary/tertiary alcohols, phenols, and free indoles. It thus offers a robust alternative to existing methods for the precise construction of diarylmethanes. The synthetic utility of the method was demonstrated by a concise synthesis of biologically active molecules and by its application to peptide modification and conjugation. Preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction of in situ formed benzyl oxalates with nickel, possibly via a radical process, is an initial step in the reaction with aryl electrophiles.

Subunit-selective proteasome inhibitors are valuable tools to assess the biological and medicinal relevance of individual proteasome active sites. Whereas the inhibitors for the beta 1c, beta 1i, beta 5c, and beta 5i subunits exploit the differences in the substrate-binding channels identified by X-ray crystallography, compounds selectively targeting beta 2c or beta 2i could not yet be rationally designed because of the high structural similarity of these two subunits. Here, we report the development, chemical synthesis, and biological screening of a compound library that led to the identification of the beta 2c- and beta 2i-selective-compounds LU-002c (4; IC50 beta 2c: 8 nM, IC50 beta 2i/beta 2c: 40-fold) and LU-002i (5; IC50 beta 2i: 220 nM, IC50 beta 2c/beta 2i: 45-fold), respectively. Co-crystal structures with beta 2 humanized yeast proteasomes visualize protein-ligand interactions crucial for subunit specificity. Altogether, organic syntheses, activity-based protein profiling, yeast mutagenesis, and structural biology allowed us to decipher significant differences of beta 2 substrate-binding channels and to complete the set of subunit-selective proteasome inhibitors.

A highly efficient palladium-free homogeneous catalyst involving Ni(acac)(2)/2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino) pyridine ((Ph2P)(2)py)/CuI components was used for the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The Sonogashira reaction was investigated between phenylacetylene and various bromoand chloroarenes containing electron neutral, electron-rich, electron-poor, electron-deficient, and sterically hindered aryl fragments. The aryl alkynes coupling products were obtained with good to excellent yields at the optimized conditions using Ni(acac)(2) (0.3 mol%)/(Ph2P)(2)py (0.6 mol%)/CuI (0.03 mol%) as the catalyst, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the additive, Et3N as the base in DMF at 100 degrees C under N-2 atmosphere.

The removal efficiency was improved by optimizing the experimental conditions affecting electrode activity and contaminant degradation. The 2,4-DCBA removal efficiency reached 90.8% at a current density at 50 mA.cm(-2), initial pH of 5, and sodium sulfate concentration of 0.05 mol.L-1, with a 2,4-DCBA concentration of 20 mg.L-1. Furthermore, a good total organic carbon removal efficiency of 81.6% was achieved in the electrocatalytic reduction and oxidation process, with the present system retaining high stability after many experiment cycles. The reaction mechanism under different conditions is discussed, which provides new approaches to the degradation of chlorinated organic compounds.

N-benzhydrylpiperazine and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles are pharmacologically active scaffolds which exhibits significant inhibitory growth effects against various cancer cells, however, antiproliferation effects and the underlying mechanism for inducing apoptosis for aforementioned scaffolds addressing HeLa cancer cells remains uncertain. In this study, N-benzhydrylpiperazine clubbed with 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (4a-4h) were synthesized, subsequently characterized using high resolution spectroscopic techniques and eventually evaluated for their antiproliferation potential by inducing apoptosis in HeLa cancer cells. The MTT assay screening results revealed that among all, compound 4d (N-benzhydryl-4-((5-(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)methyl)piperazine) in particular, exhibited IC (50) value of 28.13 +/- 0.21g/mL and significantly inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cancer cells in concentration-dependent manner. The in vitro anticancer assays for treated HeLa cells resulted in alterations in the cell morphology, reduction in colony formation, and inhibition of cell migration in concentration-dependent treatment. Furthermore, G2/M phase arrest, variations in the nuclear morphology, degradation of chromosomal DNA confirmed the ongoing apoptosis in treated HeLa cells. Increase in the expression of cytochrome C and caspase-3 confirmed the involvement of intrinsic mitochondrial pathway regulating the cell death. Also, elevation in reactive oxygen species level and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential signified that compound 4d induced apoptosis in HeLa cells by generating the oxidative stress. Therefore, compound 4d may act as a potent chemotherapeutic agent against human cervical cancer.
