Predictive models are useful tools for aqueous adsorption research; existing models such as multilinear regression (MLR), however, can only predict adsorption under specific equilibrium concentrations or for certain adsorption isotherm models. Also, few studies have discussed data processing beyond applying different modeling algorithms to improve the prediction accuracy. In this research, we employed a cosine similarity approach that focused on mining the available data before developing models; this approach can mine the most relevant data concerning the prediction target to build models and was found to considerably improve the prediction accuracy. We then built a machine-learning modeling process based on neural networks (NN), a group-selection data-splitting strategy for grouped adsorption data for adsorbent-adsorbate pairs under different equilibrium concentrations, and polyparameter linear free energy relationships (pp-LFERs) for aqueous adsorption of 165 organic compounds onto 50 biochars, 34 carbon nanotubes, 35 GACs, and 30 polymeric resins. The final NN-LFER models were successfully applied to various equilibrium concentrations regardless of the adsorption isotherm models and showed less prediction deviations than the published models with the root-mean-square errors 0.23-0.31 versus 0.23-0.97 log unit, and the predictions were improved by adding two key descriptors (BET surface area and pore volume) for the adsorbents. Finally, interpreting the NN-LFER models based on the Shapley values suggested that not considering equilibrium concentration and properties of the adsorbents in the existing MLR models is a possible reason for their higher prediction deviations.

Graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction, or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis, especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds, remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in combination with nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage functionalization of drugs and agrochemicals), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivities. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability, and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Detailed mechanistic investigations and kinetic studies indicate that an unprecedented energy-transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.

The resolution of samples containing unknown compounds of different nature, or without standards available, as is the case of chromatographic fingerprints, is still a challenge. Possibly, the most problematic aspect that prevents systematic method development is finding models that describe without bias the retention behaviour of the compounds in the samples. In this work, the use of global models (able to describe the whole sample) is proposed as an alternative to the use of individual models for each solute. Global models contain parameters that are specific for each solute, while other parameters -related to the column and solvent- are common for all solutes. A special regression procedure is presented for the construction of global models, which are applied to predict highly complex chromatograms, such as chromatographic fingerprints, for diverse experimental conditions in isocratic and gradient elution. Another interesting application is the prediction of molecular properties, such as log P-o/w from the specific solute parameters of the global models. The examined adapted models are based on the equations proposed by Snyder, Schoenmakers, Neue and Kuss, Jandera, and Bosch Roses to describe the retention. In all cases, the predictive capability was very satisfactory. Two cases of study were considered: chromatograms of camomile extracts analysed using acetonitrile gradients, and a set of 145 known compounds in a wide range of structures and functionalities, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/water mobile phases. High-temperature thermal energy storage in shallow aquifers can potentially increase ambient groundwater temperatures up to 70 degrees C or even more. Since an increase in temperature is expected to influence contaminant mass flux into groundwater monitoring the spreading of organic contaminants located in the subsurface is crucial. In numerous former studies, the NAPL solubility, one major parameter controlling mass flux on field scale, was measured at temperatures up to 70 degrees C for a broad spectrum of organic substances. However, quantitative calculations of solubilities as a function of temperature considering a compiled database are largely missing. Aiming to examine the reliability of existing solubility-temperature relationships, to describe them functionally and further to identify knowledge gaps, previously published data on solubilities of 42 different organic groundwater contaminants were evaluated in this study. By using a common temperature regression function, the calculated solubility curves from compiled solubility data for 5-70 degrees C show relative changes between a few percent (CHCs and BTEX) and up to 2000% (PAH5). As published temperature-dependent solubilities for chlorinated ethylenes are contradictory in parts, solubilities of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, 1,2-cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene were additionally investigated in more detail using batch experiments between 5 and 70 degrees C. The results show distinctive solubility minima at medium temperatures (20-40 degrees C) with concentrations decreasing from 5 degrees C to the minimum by 10-20%. The measured and calculated temperature-dependent solubilities enable a more reliable assessment of thermal energy storage at contaminated sites, of existing thermal remediation approaches and of combinations of underground heat storage with groundwater remediation. Adsorption of a diverse set of chemicals onto goethite was evaluated by column chromatography. The pH of the effluents was 4.7-5.2. Van der Waals forces dominate the exothermic adsorption of 8 nonpolar compounds (e.g., PAHs and chlorobenzenes). H-bonding is responsible for the adsorption of 32 mono-carboxylic acids (i.e., benzoic acids, naphthoic acids and acidic pharmaceuticals) and their adsorption tends to be endothermic. Steric effects significantly decreased the bonding of monocarboxylic acids with ortho-substitutions. Exothermic adsorption of 10 monophenols is controlled by weak H-bonding. Bonding of these 50 solutes onto goethite is totally reversible. In contrast, inner-sphere complexation of phthalic acid and chlortetracycline with goethite occurred according to their low desorption ratio (1.1%-54.4%). Polyparameter linear free energy relationship (PP-LFER) models were established to provide acceptable fitting results of the goethite-solute distribution coefficients (RMSE = 0.32 and 0.30 at 25 degrees C and 5 degrees C, respectively). It is worthy to note that steric effects must be considered to get a better prediction for compounds with ortho-substitutions. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

NAD(P)-dependent steroid dehydrogenase-like (NSDHL), an essential enzyme in human cholesterol synthesis and a regulator of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) trafficking pathways, has attracted interest as a therapeutic target due to its crucial relevance to cholesterol-related diseases and carcinomas. However, the development of pharmacological agents for targeting NSDHL has been hindered by the absence of the atomic details of NSDHL. In this study, we reported two X-ray crystal structures of human NSDHL, which revealed a detailed description of the coenzyme-binding site and the unique conformational change upon the binding of a coenzyme. A structure-based virtual screening and biochemical evaluation were performed and identified a novel inhibitor for NSDHL harboring suppressive activity towards EGFR. In EGFR-driven human cancer cells, treatment with the potent NSDHL inhibitor enhanced the antitumor effect of an EGFR kinase inhibitor. Overall, these findings could serve as good platforms for the development of therapeutic agents against NSDHL-related diseases.

Although 3-azoindoles have recently emerged as an appealing family of photoswitch molecules, the synthesis of such compounds has been poorly covered in the literature. Herein a high-yielding and operationally simple protocol is reported allowing the synthesis of 3-azoindoles, featuring important steric hindrance around the azo motif. Remarkably, this C-H coupling is characterized by excellent atom economy and occurs under metal-free conditions, at room temperature, and within few minutes, delivering the expected products in excellent yields (quantitatively in most of the cases). Accordingly, a library of new molecules, with potential applications as photochromic compounds, is prepared.
