Text. A general method for the synthesis of structural diversity and complexity of azepines from aldimine esters and beta ‘-acetoxy allenoates is reported. Under phosphine catalysis, a [4+3] cycloaddition for the formation of 1,3-dihydro-2H-azepine-2,2,4-tricarboxylates was achieved with broad substrate scope under mild reactions. A switchable process was given and a variety of important 2,3-dihydrochromeno[4,3-b]azepin-6(1H)-ones were selectively formed when the reaction was performed in the presence of Cs2CO3 and PPh3, which involved an intramolecular ester group migration and subsequent lactonization of 1,3-dihydro-2H-azepine-2,2,4-tricarboxylates. Besides easy handle process, high synthetic value of resulting products, it is worth to note that this work showed the novel example of 1,5-ethoxycarbonyl migration.

We report the catalytic reduction of both active esters and amides by selective C(acyl)-X (X=O, N) cleavage to access aldehyde functionality via a palladium-catalyzed strategy. Reactions are promoted by hydrosilanes as reducing reagents with good to excellent yields and with excellent chemoselectivity for C(acyl)-N and C(acyl)-O bond cleavage. Carboxylic acid C(acyl)-O bonds are activated by 2-chloro-4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazine (CDMT) to form triazine ester intermediates, which further react with hydrosilanes to yield aldehydes in one-pot two-step procedures. We demonstrate that C(acyl)-O cleavage/formylation offers higher yields and broader substrate scopes compared with C(acyl)-N cleavage under the same reaction conditions.

Herein we disclosed the utilization of copper loaded zinc oxide (ZnO-Cu) for its stimuli (O-2/light) responsive switchable performance between its reduced (S-1) and oxidized (S-2) state for two antagonistic reactions, namely oxidation of alkyl arenes/heteroarenes to aldehydes/ketones and reduction of nitro arenes/heteroarenes corresponding amines. The two states of the catalyst showed its switchable performance as highly active and poorly active catalyst for oxidation and reduction, and both reactions could be turned off and on by changing the stimuli (light and O-2/N-2). The switching efficiency between the states and their relative reactivity were found to be consistent under variety of reaction conditions and remain unaltered irrespective of oxidation-reduction (or vice versa) sequence and substrates used in the reaction. The photo catalysts (S-1 and S-2) demonstrated good catalytic activity, multiple reusability, broad substrate scope, and reasonable functional group tolerance for both the reactions and probed its quality performance in a large-scale setup. The system was used in an assisted tandem catalysis setup for the synthesis of benzyl amines utilizing both oxidation and reduction reaction by stimuli responsive switching between the states of the catalyst.

Despite remarkable advances to promote regio- and stereoselective decarboxylative arylation of inactivated olefins with benzoic acid derivatives, methodologies involving hetero-substituted alkenes are still lacking. Herein, Pd-II-catalyzed decarboxylative Heck coupling of alpha-alkoxyacrylates with (hetero)aryl carboxylic acids for the stereocontrolled production of (Z)-beta-heteroarylated vinyl ethers is reported. This methodology offers a rational and step-economical route to the synthesis of attractive beta-arylated alpha-alkoxy alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylates family which emerged as a relevant class of building blocks with different applications. Mechanistically, whereas electron rich benzoic acids undergo a Pd-II-catalyzed decarboxylation, electron-deficient substrates proceed through silver(I)-mediated decarboxylation, explaining thus the formation of stereoisomers (E) and (Z) of beta-arylated vinyl ethers in presence of these latter.

N-benzhydrylpiperazine and 1,3,4-oxadiazoles are pharmacologically active scaffolds which exhibits significant inhibitory growth effects against various cancer cells, however, antiproliferation effects and the underlying mechanism for inducing apoptosis for aforementioned scaffolds addressing HeLa cancer cells remains uncertain. In this study, N-benzhydrylpiperazine clubbed with 1,3,4-oxadiazoles (4a-4h) were synthesized, subsequently characterized using high resolution spectroscopic techniques and eventually evaluated for their antiproliferation potential by inducing apoptosis in HeLa cancer cells. The MTT assay screening results revealed that among all, compound 4d (N-benzhydryl-4-((5-(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)methyl)piperazine) in particular, exhibited IC (50) value of 28.13 +/- 0.21g/mL and significantly inhibited the proliferation of HeLa cancer cells in concentration-dependent manner. The in vitro anticancer assays for treated HeLa cells resulted in alterations in the cell morphology, reduction in colony formation, and inhibition of cell migration in concentration-dependent treatment. Furthermore, G2/M phase arrest, variations in the nuclear morphology, degradation of chromosomal DNA confirmed the ongoing apoptosis in treated HeLa cells. Increase in the expression of cytochrome C and caspase-3 confirmed the involvement of intrinsic mitochondrial pathway regulating the cell death. Also, elevation in reactive oxygen species level and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential signified that compound 4d induced apoptosis in HeLa cells by generating the oxidative stress. Therefore, compound 4d may act as a potent chemotherapeutic agent against human cervical cancer.

Asymmetric Schiff base manganese(III) complexes involving salen ligands, N,N’-bis(salicylidene)2,3-diaminopyridine, N,N’-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)2,3-diaminopyridine, N,N’-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylsalicylidene)2,3-diaminopyridine and N,N’-bis(3,5-di-chloro-salicylidene)2,3-diaminopyridine were prepared and their catalytic activity was investigated in the oxidation of some primary and secondary alcohols. During optimization of oxidation reactions, Mn-4, bearing electron withdrawing N,N’-Bis(3,5-di-chloro-salicylidene)2,3-diaminopyridine ligand, showed higher activity than other catalysts tested. The catalytic reactions were carried out in the presence of various oxidants such as oxygen, hydrogen peroxide or tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and additives such as acetic acid and imidazole. The oxidant/additive combination of TBHP and imidazole was shown to be effective for the oxidation process and the degree of their impact on oxidation reaction was found highly dependent on a balanced ratio between them. Mn-4 was selected as the most effective catalyst under optimized reaction conditions and revealed efficient for the oxidation of secondary alcohols.

Unnatural alpha-amino acids are invaluable building blocks in synthetic organic chemistry and could upgrade the function of peptides. We developed a new mode for catalytic activation of amino acid Schiff bases, serving as a platform for highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid synthesis. The redox active copper catalyst enabled efficient cross-coupling to construct contiguous tetrasubstituted carbon centers. The broad functional group compatibility highlights the mildness of the present catalysis. Notably, we achieved successive beta-functionalization and oxidation of amino acid Schiff bases to afford dehydroalanine derivatives bearing tetrasubstituted carbon. A three-component cross-coupling reaction of an amino acid Schiff base, alkyl bromides, and styrene derivatives demonstrated the high utility of the present method. The diastereoselective reaction was also achieved using menthol derivatives as a chiral auxiliary, delivering enantiomerically enriched alpha-amino acid bearing alpha,beta-continuous tetrasubstituted carbon. The synthesized highly congested unnatural alpha-amino acid could be derivatized and incorporated into peptide synthesis.

The energy released when tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(14)TAB) is combined with different derivatives of chlorobenzoates in an isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC) allows a direct evaluation of the spontaneity of the threading of the aromatic anions into the micellar palisade. The comparison between the enthalpimetric curves with the ones for viscosity of the solutions, hydrodynamic radii of the aggregates (dynamic light scattering experiments), and the fraction of aromatic anions incorporated (diffusion-ordered spectroscopy experiments) allows the establishment of the variations of enthalpy with formation, growth, and decrease of the wormlike micelles (WLMs). The formation of WLMs with C(14)TAB is very favored (very exothermic) for titrations of chlorobenzoate derivatives which present the chlorine atom in positions 3 or 4 of the aromatic ring. However, the aggregation is highly unfavorable if chlorine is at position 2 of chlorobenzoate. According to the results, the high potential of the ITC to determine critical concentrations and the energies associated with the aggregation of a cationic surfactant and aromatic anions for the formation of WLMs was demonstrated.

Activated biochar has been used in various areas, i.e., wastewater treatment. However, biochar contains volatile organic compounds, some of which are toxic organic pollutants that pose health risks to human. In this study, activated biochar was prepared by pyrolysis method using rice husks as raw materials and H2O as the activator. The volatile organic compound concentration of biochar before and after activation, as well as the adsorption characteristics of activated biochar, was investigated. The structure of the biochar was characterized by FTIR, SEM, and specific surface area analyzer. The results showed that activated biochar surface was mainly composed of carboxyl groups, and no phenolic hydroxyl or lactone groups formed during the process. In total, 54 volatile organic compounds were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The detection frequency of 45 volatile organic compounds reached 100%. The concentration of sum of these compounds was 93.26 and 110.62 mu g/g in the biochar before and after activation, respectively. Results of adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption and resolution of activated biochar to n-hexane were 29.33 and 5.4 mg/g, respectively. Compared to the biochar sample without activation, the activated biochar with the ratio of charcoal to water of 3:1 showed the best adsorption to n-hexane, whose surface area reached 351.23 m(2)/g.

High-temperature thermal energy storage in shallow aquifers can potentially increase ambient groundwater temperatures up to 70 degrees C or even more. Since an increase in temperature is expected to influence contaminant mass flux into groundwater monitoring the spreading of organic contaminants located in the subsurface is crucial. In numerous former studies, the NAPL solubility, one major parameter controlling mass flux on field scale, was measured at temperatures up to 70 degrees C for a broad spectrum of organic substances. However, quantitative calculations of solubilities as a function of temperature considering a compiled database are largely missing. Aiming to examine the reliability of existing solubility-temperature relationships, to describe them functionally and further to identify knowledge gaps, previously published data on solubilities of 42 different organic groundwater contaminants were evaluated in this study. By using a common temperature regression function, the calculated solubility curves from compiled solubility data for 5-70 degrees C show relative changes between a few percent (CHCs and BTEX) and up to 2000% (PAH5). As published temperature-dependent solubilities for chlorinated ethylenes are contradictory in parts, solubilities of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene, 1,2-cis-dichloroethylene and 1,2-trans-dichloroethylene were additionally investigated in more detail using batch experiments between 5 and 70 degrees C. The results show distinctive solubility minima at medium temperatures (20-40 degrees C) with concentrations decreasing from 5 degrees C to the minimum by 10-20%. The measured and calculated temperature-dependent solubilities enable a more reliable assessment of thermal energy storage at contaminated sites, of existing thermal remediation approaches and of combinations of underground heat storage with groundwater remediation.
