The present study reports on the degradation of chlorinated benzoic acids (CBAs), commonly present in the environment as pollutants, by a hydrodehalogenation reaction utilizing the Raney Al-Ni alloy (50:50 wt% Al:Ni). The hydrodehalogenation reaction using the Raney Al-Ni alloy has already been proven as an efficient tool for fast and efficient degradation of halogenated persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Herein, the nano-structured Raney Al-Ni alloy was prepared by an alternative mechano-thermal approach starting from pure elements in a form of powders. The prepared alloy was characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution, and active surface area analyses. The properties of the material were compared with a commercial sample of the same alloy prepared by the atomization process. The activity of the synthesized alloy was evaluated as removal efficiency and a rate of dehalogenation of three different CBAs – 2-chlorobenzoic acid, 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid, and 2,3,6-trichlorobenzoic acid (trysben); used in the past as an herbicide. Dehalogenation of all three tested CBAs yielded benzoic acid as the only product and followed the first-order reaction kinetics. Compared to the commercially available alloy, enhanced kinetics of CBAs removal was achieved, owing to the solid-state properties of the mechano-thermally prepared alloy.

Disposable sanitary pads are a necessity for women’s health, but safety concerns regarding the use of these products have created anxiety. The aim of this study was to conduct a risk assessment of 74 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which were expected to be contained within sanitary pads. Of the 74 VOCs, 50 were found in sanitary pads retailed in Korea at concentrations ranging from 0.025 to 3548.09 mu g/pad. In order to undertake a risk assessment of the VOCs, the toxicological database of these compounds in the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), National Toxicology Program (NTP) and World Health Organization (WHO) was searched. Ethanol was found to exhibit the highest reference dose (RfD) while 1,2-dibromo-3-chloro-propane displayed the lowest RfD. Consequently, a worst-case exposure scenario was applied in this study. It was assumed that there was the use of 7.5 sanitary napkins/day for 7 days/month. In the case of panty liners or overnight sanitary napkins, the utilization of 90 panty liners/month or 21 overnight sanitary napkins/month was assumed, respectively. In addition, 43 kg, the body weight of 12 to 13-year-old young women, and 100% VOCs skin absorption were employed for risk assessment. The systemic exposure dose (SED) values were calculated ranging from 1.74 (1,1,2-trichloroethane) ng/kg/day to 144.4 (ethanol, absolute) mu g/kg/day. Uncertainty factors (UFs) were applied ranging from 10 to 100,000 in accordance with the robustness of animal or human experiments. The margin of exposure (MOE) of 34 VOCs was more than 1 (acceptable MOE > 1). Applicable carcinogenic references reported that the cancer risk of five VOCs was below 10(-6). Based on our findings, evidence indicates that the non-cancer and cancer risks associated with VOCs detected in sanitary pads currently used in South Korea do not pose an adverse health risk in women.

Objective A growing body of evidence suggests that testing for influenza virus alone is more appropriate than multiplex respiratory viral panel (RVP) testing for general populations of patients with respiratory tract infections. We aimed to decrease the proportion of RVPs out of total respiratory viral testing ordered during influenza season. Methods We implemented two consecutive interventions: reflex testing for RVPs only after a negative influenza test, and noninterruptive clinical decision support (CDS) including modifications of the computerized physician order entry search behavior and cost display. We conducted an interrupted time series of RVPs and influenza polymerase chain reaction tests pre- and postintervention, and performed a mixed-effects logistic regression analysis with a primary outcome of proportion of RVPs out of total respiratory viral tests. The primary predictor was the intervention period, and covariates included the provider, clinical setting, associated diagnoses, and influenza incidence. Results From March 2013 to April 2019, there were 24,294 RVPs and 26,012 influenza tests ( n = 50,306). Odds of ordering an RVP decreased during the reflex testing period (odds ratio: 0.432, 95% confidence interval: 0.397-0.469), and decreased more dramatically during the noninterruptive CDS period (odds ratio: 0.291, 95% confidence interval: 0.259-0.327). Discussion The odds of ordering an RVP were 71% less with the noninterruptive CDS intervention, which projected 4,773 fewer RVPs compared with baseline. Assuming a cost equal to Medicare reimbursement rates for RVPs and influenza tests, this would generate an estimated averted cost of $1,259,474 per year. Conclusion Noninterruptive CDS interventions are effective in reducing unnecessary and expensive testing, and avoid typical pitfalls such as alert fatigue.

We report a highly efficient ortho-selective electrophilic chlorination of phenols utilizing a Lewis basic selenoether catalyst. The selenoether catalyst resulted in comparable selectivities to our previously reported bis-thiourea ortho-selective catalyst, with a catalyst loading as low as 1%. The new catalytic system also allowed us to extend this chemistry to obtain excellent ortho-selectivities for unprotected anilines. The selectivities of this reaction are up to >20:1 ortho/para, while the innate selectivities for phenols and anilines are approximately 1:4 ortho/para. A series of preliminary studies revealed that the substrates require a hydrogen-bonding moiety for selectivity.

A family of 2-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl-based phosphine ligands were synthesized and their efficacy in promoting the steric hindered Buchwald-Hartwig amination was evaluated. In the presence of Pd(OAc) (2) (0.03-1.0 mol%) associated with the newly developed a carbazolyl-derived phosphine ligand, the synthesis of tetra- ortho -substituted diarylamines proceeded smoothly with excellent product yields (up to 99%). A remarkable result was obtained even for the coupling of highly sterically congested 2,6-diisopropylaniline and hindered 2-chloro-1,3,5-triisopropylbenzene (96% isolated yield). A possible decomposition pathway for the anthracenyl C-N coupling product is also reported.

Chloroaluminate ionic liquids (ILs) have been immensely used as homogeneous catalyst in Friedel-Crafts reaction. We have recently synthesized chloroaluminate ILs by reacting aluminium chloride with a hydrophobic neutral ligand i.e. tributylamine (TBA:AlCl3). The current study elaborates on the investigations of the composition of the ionic liquids at various stages of their formation. The ionic liquids were synthesized using various mole ratios of tributyl amine and aluminium chloride in range of 1:1 to 1:2.3, in presence of an aromatic solvent in a one pot reaction. Various characterization techniques like Mass spectrometry, Al-27 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, P-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were used to elucidate the formation of various moieties of the TBA:AlCl3 Ionic Liquid. This study also elaborates on the investigations of the cationic and anionic moieties and their structure-property relationship for various applications. Various Friedel-Crafts reaction of industrial importance were performed using the ionic liquid having (Al2Cl7)(-) moiety to assess its performance and compared with conventional processes. The synthesized products were characterised by sophisticated analytical techniques like H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, FTIR, GC-MS, GC-FID, to name a few. This study describes the first palladium-catalyzed, site-selective alpha- and gamma-arylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones with (hetero)aryl halides. A wide range of hetero(aryl)halides coupled with alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, and transformation into the arylated products proceeded with excellent to good yields. The site selectivity of the reaction is switchable by simply changing the phosphine ligand to access either alpha-arylated or gamma-arylated products in good to excellent yields by using a low catalyst loading, and the method demonstrates good functional-group compatibility.

In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of phthalazinone acridine derivatives as dual PARP and Topo inhibitors. MTF assays indicated that most of the compounds significantly inhibited multiple cancer cells proliferation. In addition, all the compounds displayed Topo II inhibition activity at 10 mol/L, and also possessed good PARP-1 inhibitory activities. Subsequent mechanistic studies showed that compound 9a induced remarkable apoptosis and caused prominent S cell cycle arrest in HCT116 cells. Our study suggested that 9a inhibiting Topo and PARP concurrently can be a potential lead compound for cancer therapy. Here we report a protocol to synthesize diversiform fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues with potential biological activities in one step via directed C-2 and C-3 dual C-H functionalization of indoles. We also attempted to take into account fluorinated imidoyl chlorides as a novel kind of synthons in the directed C-H functionalization reactions. As a result, a variety of fluorinated isocryptolepine analogues were obtained in up to 96% yield. Moreover, we conducted control experiments to disclose the reaction mechanism.

A highly efficient palladium-free homogeneous catalyst involving Ni(acac)(2)/2,6-bis(diphenylphosphino) pyridine ((Ph2P)(2)py)/CuI components was used for the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The Sonogashira reaction was investigated between phenylacetylene and various bromoand chloroarenes containing electron neutral, electron-rich, electron-poor, electron-deficient, and sterically hindered aryl fragments. The aryl alkynes coupling products were obtained with good to excellent yields at the optimized conditions using Ni(acac)(2) (0.3 mol%)/(Ph2P)(2)py (0.6 mol%)/CuI (0.03 mol%) as the catalyst, tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) as the additive, Et3N as the base in DMF at 100 degrees C under N-2 atmosphere.
