A divergent approach has been successfully developed for the synthesis of N-1,2,4-oxadiazole substituted sulfoximines starting from N-cyano sulfoximines. This method has a wide degree of substrate scope that includes aryl, heteroaryl, alkyl, fluoroalkyl and saturated heterocyclic compounds. Excellent functional group tolerability was also observed. Extension of this methodology to nucleosides, amino acids and dipeptides was found to be successful. A gram scale reaction was also established. The major part of this method is metal free and the utility of environmentally friendly solvents such as 2-methyl THF and ionic liquids is an added advantage.

While the synthesis of biaryls has advanced rapidly in the past decades, cross-Ullman couplings of aryl chlorides, the most abundant aryl electrophiles, have remained elusive. Reported here is the first general cross-Ullman coupling of aryl chlorides with aryl triflates. The selectivity challenge associated with coupling an inert electrophile with a reactive one is overcome using a multimetallic strategy with the appropriate choice of additive. Studies demonstrate that LiCl is essential for effective cross-coupling by accelerating the reduction of Ni(II) to Ni(0) and counteracting autoinhibition of reduction at Zn(0) by Zn(II) salts. The modified conditions tolerate a variety of functional groups on either coupling partner (42 examples), and examples include a three-step synthesis of flurbiprofen.

A novel, sustainable, environmentally friendly, high substrate scope, efficient, solvent-free and metal catalyst-free method for the cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction between N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and benzyl/ether compounds is described. This coupling reaction proceeds through ultrasound acceleration. A silica-based network was used to immobilize ionic liquid-based ionogels and applied as a fiber coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The ionogels were prepared by a sol-gel process, using two ionic liquids, triethylsulfonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Set(3)][TFSI]) and 1-butyl-1-methylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C(4)C(1)Pip] [TFSI]), as well as their equimolar mixture. Methyltrimethoxysilane was used as the sol-gel precursor, and trifluoroacetic acid as a reaction catalyst. The fabricated ionogel fibers were evaluated as sorbent coating in headspace SPME combined with gas chromatography with barrier ionization discharge detection for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The fibers showed a high affinity to aromatic VOCs, yielding good sensitivity and precision. Then, the developed method was applied to the analysis of aqueous samples. During the study, the main extraction parameters, i.e., salt concentration, extraction time, and temperature, were optimized for maximum fiber sorption and to maximize the enrichment factors. The average limits of detection were found to be 0.15 mu g L-1, 0.40 mu g L-1, and 0.07 mu g L-1, and the enrichment factors were in the 25700-61000, 33200-84700, and 29100-96500 ranges for [Set(3)], [C4C1 Pip] and [Set(3)/C4C1 Pip], respectively. The single fiber and fiber-to-fiber reproducibilities were below 11.2% and 30.6%, respectively. The results of this work suggest the possibility of fabricating selected extractants based on the physicochemical properties of the ionic liquids and target analytes.

The recent pandemic (COVID-19) has seen a sweeping and surging use of products intended to clean and disinfect, such as air sprays, hand sanitizers, and surface cleaners, many of which contain fragrance. However, exposure to fragranced cleaning products has been associated with adverse effects on human health. Products can emit a range of volatile chemicals, including some classified as hazardous, but relatively few ingredients are disclosed to the public. Thus, relatively little is known about the specific emissions from these products. This study investigates the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from pandemic products that are being used frequently and extensively in society. In addition, among these emissions, this study identifies potentially hazardous compounds, compares so-called green and regular versions of products, and examines whether ingredients are disclosed to the public. Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, 26 commonly used pandemic products, including 13 regular and 13 so-called green versions, were analyzed for their volatile emissions. Product types included hand sanitizers, air disinfectants, multipurpose cleaners, and handwashing soap. All products were fragranced. The analyses found the products collectively emitted 399 VOCs with 127 VOCs classified as potentially hazardous. All products emitted potentially hazardous compounds. Comparing regular products and green products, no significant difference was found in the emissions of the most prevalent compounds. Further, among the 399 compounds emitted, only 4% of all VOCs and 11% of potentially hazardous VOCs were disclosed on any product label or safety data sheet. This study reveals that pandemic products can generate volatile emissions that could pose risks to health, that could be unrecognized, and that could be reduced, such as by using fragrance-free versions of products.

A series of novel thiazolo[4,5-d]pyrimidin-7(6H)-ones (3aa-3eq) were designed, synthesized, and evaluated as the type I positive allosteric modulators of human alpha 7 nAChR expressed in Xenopus ooctyes by a two-electrode voltage clamp. The structure-activity relationship analysis identified the compound 3ea as a potent and efficacious PAM with the maximum activation effect of the alpha 7 current of over 1633% in the presence of acetylcholine (100 mu M) and an EC50 = 1.26 mu M. It is highly specific to alpha 7 nAChR over other subtypes of nAChR, 5-HT3A, NMDA, and GABA(A) receptors. Compound 3ea showed an elimination half-life of 10.8 +/- 1.5 h for 3 mg/kg, i.v., and 7.4 +/- 1.1 h for 60 mg/kg, i.g. in rat. It also exhibited sufficient blood-brain barrier penetration with no significant effect on hERG channel. Most importantly, compound 3ea dose-dependently (0.1-1 mg/kg, i.p.) reversed the prepulse inhibition deficit induced by MK-801 in the mouse schizophrenia model. X

The iron-catalyzed alpha-C-H alkylation of N-methylanilines without any directing group by cross-dehydrogenative coupling between unactivated C(sp(3))-H and C(sp(3))-H bonds has been established for the first time, which provides a good complement to C(sp(3))-H activation reactions and expands the field of Fe-catalyzed C-H functionalizations. Many different C(sp(3))-H bonds in cyclic alkanes, cyclic ethers, and toluene derivatives can be used as coupling partners. Graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted significant interest in recent years and found applications in diverse light-to-energy conversions such as artificial photosynthesis, CO2 reduction, or degradation of organic pollutants. However, their utilization in synthetic photocatalysis, especially in the direct functionalization of C(sp(3))-H bonds, remains underexplored. Herein, we report mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-CN as a heterogeneous organic semiconductor photocatalyst for direct arylation of C(sp(3))-H bonds in combination with nickel catalysis. Our protocol has a broad synthetic scope (>70 examples including late-stage functionalization of drugs and agrochemicals), is operationally simple, and shows high chemo- and regioselectivities. Facile separation and recycling of the mpg-CN catalyst in combination with its low preparation cost, innate photochemical stability, and low toxicity are beneficial features overcoming typical shortcomings of homogeneous photocatalysis. Detailed mechanistic investigations and kinetic studies indicate that an unprecedented energy-transfer process (EnT) from the organic semiconductor to the nickel complex is operating.
