An efficient and operationally simple protocol has been demonstrated for the synthesis of 1,3,5,7-tetrasubstituted pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidines via TBHP-mediated direct oxidative coupling of N-uracil amidines and methylarenes under metal-free conditions. Due to the inherent stability of methylarenes compared to aldehydes, the presented synthetic protocol is adaptable to a broad substrate scope, is operationally simple, has no need for stringent protection in the whole preparation process, and has the potential to prepare valuable products that are currently inaccessible or challenging to prepare using conventional methods. It is a significantly important complement to the conventional synthetic methods. The reaction possesses an efficient tandem oxidation-imination-cyclization process.

A series of imidazolium-based palladate precatalysts has been synthesized and the catalytic activity of these air- and moisture-stable complexes evaluated as a function of the nature of the imidazolium counterion. These precatalysts can be converted under catalytic conditions to Pd-NHC species capable of enabling the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination and the alpha-arylation of ketones. Both reactions can be carried out efficiently under very mild operating conditions. The effectiveness of the protocol was tested on functionality-laden substrates.

A nickel-catalyzed amination of aryl chlorides with diverse amides via C-N bond cleavage has been realized under mild conditions. A broad substrate scope with excellent functional group tolerance at a low catalyst loading makes the protocol powerful for synthesizing various aromatic amines. The aryl chlorides could selectively couple to the amino fragments rather than the carbonyl moieties of amides. Our protocol complements the conventional amination of aryl chlorides and expands the usage of inactive amides.

Activated biochar has been used in various areas, i.e., wastewater treatment. However, biochar contains volatile organic compounds, some of which are toxic organic pollutants that pose health risks to human. In this study, activated biochar was prepared by pyrolysis method using rice husks as raw materials and H2O as the activator. The volatile organic compound concentration of biochar before and after activation, as well as the adsorption characteristics of activated biochar, was investigated. The structure of the biochar was characterized by FTIR, SEM, and specific surface area analyzer. The results showed that activated biochar surface was mainly composed of carboxyl groups, and no phenolic hydroxyl or lactone groups formed during the process. In total, 54 volatile organic compounds were analyzed by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The detection frequency of 45 volatile organic compounds reached 100%. The concentration of sum of these compounds was 93.26 and 110.62 mu g/g in the biochar before and after activation, respectively. Results of adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption and resolution of activated biochar to n-hexane were 29.33 and 5.4 mg/g, respectively. Compared to the biochar sample without activation, the activated biochar with the ratio of charcoal to water of 3:1 showed the best adsorption to n-hexane, whose surface area reached 351.23 m(2)/g.

The heterocyclic compound 2-amino-N-(2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)thiazole-5-carboxamide (1), designed using 2-chloro-6-methylaniline (2) as the start material, was successfully obtained via multiple synthesis route and finally characterized by IR, H-1 NMR, and single-cystal X-ray crystallography. To select the suitable candidates for tissue regeneration, the induction activity of the compound on the dental pulp mesenchymal stem cells (DP-MSCs) was evaluated. We describe a new catalytic strategy to transcend the energetic limitations of visible light by electrochemically priming a photocatalyst prior to excitation. This new catalytic system is able to productively engage aryl chlorides with reduction potentials hundreds of millivolts beyond the potential of Na-0 in productive radical coupling reactions. The aryl radicals produced via this strategy can be leveraged for both carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond-forming reactions. Through direct comparison, we illustrate the reactivity and selectivity advantages of this approach relative to electrolysis and photoredox catalysis.

The energy released when tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(14)TAB) is combined with different derivatives of chlorobenzoates in an isothermal titration calorimeter (ITC) allows a direct evaluation of the spontaneity of the threading of the aromatic anions into the micellar palisade. The comparison between the enthalpimetric curves with the ones for viscosity of the solutions, hydrodynamic radii of the aggregates (dynamic light scattering experiments), and the fraction of aromatic anions incorporated (diffusion-ordered spectroscopy experiments) allows the establishment of the variations of enthalpy with formation, growth, and decrease of the wormlike micelles (WLMs). The formation of WLMs with C(14)TAB is very favored (very exothermic) for titrations of chlorobenzoate derivatives which present the chlorine atom in positions 3 or 4 of the aromatic ring. However, the aggregation is highly unfavorable if chlorine is at position 2 of chlorobenzoate. According to the results, the high potential of the ITC to determine critical concentrations and the energies associated with the aggregation of a cationic surfactant and aromatic anions for the formation of WLMs was demonstrated.

Synthesis of 50 analogues of the natural insecticide synergists, dillapiol and sesamol, is reported. These were evaluated as potential insecticide synergists based on their inhibition of human CYP3A4. The most potent inhibitors have a relatively large hydrophobic substituent at either position 5 or 6 of these molecules. For example, 5-(benzyloxy)-6-(3-phenylsulfonyl)propyl)benzo[d] [1,3]dioxole (18) and the diphenyl acetate of (6,7-dimethoxybenzo[d] [1,3]dioxol-5-yl)propan-1-ol (5n) show inhibitory concentrations for 50% activity IC50 values of 0.086 and 0.2 mu M, respectively. These compounds are 106 and 46 times more potent than dillapiol whose IC50 for the inhibition of CYP3A4 is 9.2 mu M. The ortho-chloro analogue (8f), whose activity is 86 times the activity of dillapiol, is the most potent of the fourteen 5-(benzyloxy-6-(2-propenyl)benzo[d][1,3]dioxoles prepared for this study.

Visible light-induced organic reactions are important chemical transformations in organic chemistry, and their efficiency highly depends on suitable photocatalysts. However, the commonly used photocatalysts are precious transition-metal complexes and elaborate organic dyes, which hamper large-scale production due to high cost. Here, for the first time, we report a novel strategy: light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate-mediated selective oxidation of C-H bonds, allowing high-value-added aromatic ketones and carboxylic acids to be easily prepared in high-to-excellent yields using readily available alkyl arenes, methyl arenes and aldehydes as materials. The mechanistic investigations showed that the treatment of inexpensive and readily available sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate with oxygen under irradiation of light couldin situform a pentacoordinate sulfide intermediate as an efficient photosensitizer. The method represents a highly efficient, economical and environmentally friendly strategy, and the light and oxygen-enabled sodium trifluoromethanesulfinate photocatalytic system represents a breakthrough in photochemistry.
