Nanocarbons as alternatives to metal-based catalysts have attracted great interest in heterogeneous catalysis. However, the powder form of nanocarbons limits their industrial applications because of the large pressure drop in a fixed-bed reactor and the big difficulties in handling loose powder in a fluidized-bed reactor. To address these issues, herein, we report a general poly(imidazolium-methylene)-assisted grinding strategy for synthesizing mechanically robust nanocarbon-embedded network monoliths by grinding a mixture composed of nanocarbons and the as-formed poly(imidazolium-methylene) chloride (PImM) with a subsequent pyrolysis process. The as-prepared nanocarbon-based network monoliths feature nanocarbons to be well-dispersed within a N-doped carbon (NC) network. The monolith is adequately hard and high density and can be cracked and sieved into granule nanocarbon catalysts. Taking nanodiamonds (NDs) as an example, in the grinding procedure, PImM can penetrate into ND aggregates to disperse NDs and can adhere the deagglomerated NDs because there is a strong interaction between NDs and PImM through strong cation-p interactions, pi-pi interactions, and electrostatic interactions since many nanocarbons including NDs have negative charges on their surface. The designed PImM plays three roles in the preparation of ND-embedded network monolith including the adhering agent, isolating agent, and a precursor of the NC network. The resulting granule ND@NC carbocatalyst from its corresponding ND@NC network monolith shows 6.39 mmol g(-1) h(-1) of steady-state styrene rate (9.26 and 2.24 times higher compared to that of NC and ND, respectively) with 99.0% of styrene selectivity for ethylbenzene direct dehydrogenation (EDH) to styrene, a commercially important reaction. The granule ND@NC carbocatalyst also shows high catalytic stability for EDH reaction. The strategy has been extended to carbon nanofiber-embedded monoliths. This work not only creates a granule carbocatalyst for styrene production via EDH reaction but also paves an avenue to overcome the bottleneck problems regarding the applications of the powders of diverse nanocarbons in heterogeneous catalysis.

Thermodynamic properties of some neoteric three-component deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and their mixture with water are of great practical and fundamental importance in various fields of sciences. In this work the measurements of density and speed of sound data for neat four DESs (choline chloride/lactic acid/ethylene glycol, choline chloride/lactic acid/glycerol, choline chloride/oxalic acid/ethylene glycol and choline chloride/oxalic acid/glycerol) and their aqueous mixture were carried out over the entire composition range at T = (288.15 to 318.15) K. Some of the thermodynamic properties including the excess molar volumes (V-E), the apparent molar volumes (V-phi,V-1 and V-phi,V-2), excess isobaric thermal expansion (alpha(E)(p, m)), the isentropic compressibility deviation (Delta kappa(s)) and speed of sound deviation (Delta u) were computed based on these data. These main properties were evaluated according to numerous solute-solvent interactions among the various components in the mixtures for all of the investigated systems. In addition, the properties were fitted by the Redlich-Kister and Hwang equations. By further immersing the hybrid hydrogels into calcium chloride solution, hybrid alginate-Ca2+/P(NIPAM-co-OEGMA(300))/g-C3N4 interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) hydrogels are obtained. Due to the homogeneous distribution of g-C3N4 and the existence of thermoresponsive polymers, the hybrid IPN hydrogels present good adsorption capability and high degradation efficiency for methylene blue (MB) especially at high temperature under ultraviolet radiation. A silver shell-copper core coating was applied on additively manufactured (AM) AlSi10Mg alloy to improve the electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, surface roughness and indentation hardness. Surface microstructure evolution and roughness of the AM alloy, i.e. as-built, during the subsequent processes, such as heat treatment, shot peening and Ag-Cu coating, were comprehensively characterized using secondary electron imaging in a scanning electron microscope and a scanning laser microscope, respectively. Also, the surface indentation hardness of the coated alloy was evaluated to study the mechanical response. The corrosion behavior and electrical conductivity of the Ag-Cu coated AM alloy were evaluated and compared with the as-built and shot peened AM alloy using the electrochemical and the electrical resistivity measurements, respectively. The results showed that the Ag-Cu coating could significantly increase the surface hardness of the AM AlSi10Mg four times along with an average of 60% improvement in roughness. The electrochemical characterization shows a significant increase in the corrosion resistance for the Ag-Cu coated AM AlSi10Mg with a low corrosion current density of 4 mu mA/cm(2) in a chloride solution compared to the uncoated alloy. Finally, it was observed that the Ag-Cu coating leads to reduction of the electrical resistance of the studied AM alloy by 40%. Consequently, the electrical conductivity property of the coated AM AlSi10Mg increases.

The inhibition efficiency of N- and/or O-containing compounds for the corrosion of metals and alloys in aggressive media is an essential theme. For this purpose, a newly synthesized and fully characterized multidentate ligand, N,N’-((ethane-1,2-diylbis(azanediyl))bis(ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(quinoline-2-carboxamide) (QATETA), derived from quinaldic acid and triethylenetetramine (TETA) was examined gravimetrically and electrochemically as an inhibitor for the corrosion for mild steel in aqueous sodium chloride (3.5 %). Moreover, the reactivity and efficiency of QATETA were also theoretically investigated using density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations methods. The results indicate that the corrosion inhibition of QATETA was concentration-dependent. In addition, QATETA was categorized as a mixed type inhibitor. Thermodynamic calculations confirmed that the adsorption of QATETA on the metal surface is a spontaneous process obeying Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Furthermore, computational simulations have corroborated the experimental results. Both physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms are suggested.

A novel cyclization reaction by using hexachloroacetone as C2 synthon has been studied. The optimal condition was obtained by synthesis of bibenzothiazole in the presence hexachloroacetone in water. After spinal cord injury (SCI), the majority of individuals develop spasticity, a debilitating condition involving involuntary movements, co-contraction of antagonistic muscles, and hyperreflexia. By acting on GABAergic and Ca2+-dependent signaling, current anti-spastic medications lead to serious side effects, including a drastic decrease in motoneuronal excitability which impairs motor function and rehabilitation efforts. Thus, we hypothesized that spastic symptoms can be alleviated directly through restoration of chloride homeostasis and endogenous inhibition by increasing KCC2 activity. Here, we used the recently developed KCC2 enhancer, CLP257, to evaluate the effects of acutely increasing KCC2 extrusion capability on spastic symptoms after chronic SCI. Sprague Dawley rats received a spinal cord transection at T12 and were either bike-trained or remained sedentary for 5 weeks. Increasing KCC2 activity in the lumbar enlargement improved the rate-dependent depression of the H-reflex and reduced both phasic and tonic EMG responses to muscle stretch in sedentary animals after chronic SCI. Furthermore, the improvements due to this pharmacological treatment mirror those of exercise. Together, our results suggest that pharmacologically increasing KCC2 activity is a promising approach to decrease spastic symptoms in individuals with SCI. By acting to directly restore endogenous inhibition, this strategy has potential to avoid severe side effects and improve the quality of life of affected individuals.

Background: Stem cell therapy is gaining momentum as an effective treatment strategy for degenerative diseases. Adult stem cells isolated from various sources (i.e., cord blood, bone marrow, adipose tissue) are being considered as a realistic option due to their well-documented therapeutic potentials. Our previous studies standardized a method to isolate circulating multipotent cells (CMCs) that are able to sustain long term in vitro culture and differentiate towards mesodermal lineages. Methods: In this work, long-term cultures of CMCs were stimulated to study in vitro neuronal and myogenic differentiation. After induction, cells were analysed at different time points. Morphological studies were performed by scanning electron microscopy and specific neuronal and myogenic marker expression were evaluated using RT-PCR, flow cytometry and western blot. For myogenic plasticity study, CMCs were transplanted into in vivo model of chemically-induced muscle damage. Results: After neurogenic induction, CMCs showed characteristic dendrite-like morphology and expressed specific neuronal markers both at mRNA and protein level. The calcium flux activity of CMCs under stimulation with potassium chloride and the secretion of noradrenalin confirmed their ability to acquire a functional phenotype. In parallel, the myogenic potential of CMCs was confirmed by their ability to form syncytium-like structures in vitro and express myogenic markers both at early and late phases of differentiation. Interestingly, in a rat model of bupivacaine-induced muscle damage, CMCs integrated within the host tissue taking part in tissue repair. Conclusion: Overall, collected data demonstrated long-term cultured CMCs retain proliferative and differentiative potentials suggesting to be a good candidate for cell therapy.
