This paper provides the current state of knowledge available from the literature regarding the use of copper sulphate (CuSO4) in culture of freshwater and marine fish as related to toxicity, growth performance, physiology, immunity, histomorphology and antiparasitic treatment. From this review, I have assessed and discussed all of these factors, as well as the potential strategies available for use in fish farming. Acute toxicity (96h-LD50) to CuSO4 varies widely among fish species (0.001-730 mg/L) depending on various water quality factors, and many fish species are sensitive to concentrations near those required for controlling and treating parasite infections. Acute exposure to CuSO4 may lead to mortality while sublethal exposure in different organism causes changes in feeding and swimming behaviour, growth performance, histomorphology of gills, liver, kidney, and spleen, hematology, blood biochemistry, the antioxidant defense system, and oxygen consumption. After exposure to copper sulphate, copper ions often accumulate in the gills, liver, kidney and spleen, and in the gills provokes changes in mucus and chloride cells, hyperplasia and/or hypertrophy of primary and/or secondary lamellae, edema of the gill epithelium, and lamellar fusion. Seawater is the most plentiful natural resource we have on earth and new research is looking at seawater as an alternative to freshwater for hydrogen production by electrolysis. In situ Fe3O4 nanoparticles coating of polymers for separating hazardous PVC from microplastic mixtures

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) poses great challenges to the recycling of plastic wastes since it highly deteriorates the properties of other plastics and induces the formation of hazardous chlorinated dioxins and furans. For the first time, we developed a novel hydrophilization method of polymers, the in situ magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (NPs) coating, to facilitate the flotation separation of PVC from microplastic mixtures. A homogeneous Fe3O4 NPs layer was selectively fabricated on the surface of non-PVC microplastics via a facile in situ coprecipitation method. This obviously decreased the contact angle of non-PVC microplastics by approximately 30 degrees due to the plenty of hydroxyl groups on the surface of Fe3O4 NPs. However, the fabrication was not observed on the surface of PVC due to the weak interaction between Fe3+/Fe2+ and the surface of PVC. In this regard, the application of in situ Fe3O4 NPs coating in the flotation separation of PVC was systematically optimized using Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology. Quadratic models were generated to predict the floatability of microplastics, ascertain the effect of independent and interacted parameters, and numerically optimize the separation efficiency. Exogenous plant growth regulators/plant growth promoting bacteria roles in mitigating water-deficit stress on chicory (Cichorium pumilum Jacq.) at a physiological level

Plants respond differently to water-deficit stress conditions in the soil. In order to study different irrigation regimes and plant growth regulators/plant growth promoting bacteria effects on some physiological characteristics and inulin content in chicory plants, experiments were conducted as a factorial based on randomized complete block design with five replications at the greenhouse of Agricultural Faculty of Azarbaijan Shahid Madani University, Tabriz, Iran in 2017-2018. Experimental factors were different irrigation regimes: ((i) irrigation at the 55 %; (ii) irrigation at the 30 %; and (iii) irrigation at the 10 % of total available water capacity in the soil) and plant growth regulators including methyl jasmonate, uniconazole, chlormequat chloride and the solution containing plant growth promoting bacteria. Results indicated that the lowest relative water content, membrane stability index, chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids; soluble sugars and inulin in the roots; and the highest thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, proline, and soluble sugars in the leaves were related to severe water-deficit stress in the soil. Relative water content, membrane stability index, chlorophyll a, b, total chlorophyll, carotenoids, proline (except of plant growth promoting bacteria), soluble sugars and inulin increased, whereas thiobarbituric acid reactive substances decreased by the application of exogenous plant growth regulators/plant growth promoting bacteria compared with control plants. Interaction effects revealed that plant growth regulators/plant growth promoting bacteria could diminish water-deficit stress adverse effects in chicory plants at a physiological level by regulating endogenous phytohormones and antioxidant enzymes. In general, exogenous plant growth regulators especially uniconazole and plant growth promoting bacteria, improved inulin content in chicory plants compared with control plants.

Effect of Klotho protein during porcine oocyte maturation via Wnt signaling

Klotho protein is well-known as an anti-aging agent, however, several studies have suggested that Klotho protein also increases antioxidant activity and the reproductive system, as Klotho protein is closely associated with Wnt signaling. The objective of our study was to investigate the enhancement of porcine oocyte in vitro maturation via the Klotho protein-Wnt signaling pathway. Following immunohistochemistry and ELISA, we treated cells with Klotho protein during in vitro maturation. Lithium Chloride, a specific activator of Wnt signaling, was subsequently co-administered with Klotho protein. Mature oocytes subjected to treatments were used for the analysis of embryonic development, qRT-PCR, and immunocytochemistry. Treatment with 5pg/ml Klotho protein significantly increased cumulus cell expansion, blastocyst formation rates, and the total cell number of blastocysts. During cotreatment with 5mM Lithium Chloride and 5pg/ml Klotho protein, blastocyst formation rates were the highest in Klotho protein-treated oocytes and the lowest in Lithium Chloride-treated oocytes. The effects of PTX on tumor cells have been related to the disruption of the NF-kappa B pathway, thus preventing the activation of cell survival mechanisms such as the expression of anti-apoptotic genes, the secretion of proinflammatory interleukins, and growth factors. Objective In this work, we studied the antitumor proprieties of PTX in human SiHa cervical carcinoma cells resistant to CIS. Materials and Methods SiHa and HeLa cervical cancer cells and their CIS-resistant derived cell lines (SiHaCIS-R and HeLaCIS-R, respectively) were used as in-vitro models. We studied the effects of PTX alone or in combination with CIS on cell viability, apoptosis, caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 activity, cleaved PARP-1, anti-apoptotic protein (Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL) levels, p65 phosphorylation, cadmium chloride (CdCl2) sensitivity, Platinum (Pt) accumulation, and glutathione (GSH) levels, as well as on the gene expression of GSH and drug transporters (influx and efflux). Results PTX sensitized SiHaCIS-R cells to the effects of CIS by inducing apoptosis, caspase activation, and PARP-1 cleavage. PTX treatment also decreased p65 phosphorylation, increased Pt levels, depleted GSH, and downregulated the expression of the ATP7A, ATP7B, GSR, and MGST1 genes. A new family of base-metal nickel complexes [Ni(L1-10)(2)] (1-10) were synthesized from tridentate meridional ligands (LH)-H-1 to (LH)-H-10 (where H stands for dissociable proton). Co-orchestration of acute kidney injury and non-kidney organ failures in critically ill patients with cirrhosis

Background & Aims Little is known on the course of acute kidney injury (AKI) and its relation to non-kidney organ failures and mortality in critically ill patients with cirrhosis (CICs). Methods We conducted a large prospective, single-centre, observational study in which CICs were followed up daily, during the first 7 days of intensive care, collecting prespecified criteria for AKI, extrarenal extrahepatic organ failures (ERH-OFs) and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Results A total of 291 patients admitted to ICU were enrolled; 231 (79.4%) had at least one ERH-OFs, 168 (58%) had AKI at presentation, and 145 (49.8%) died by 28 days. At day seven relative to baseline, 151 (51.8%) patients had progressive or persistent AKI, while the rest remained free of AKI or had AKI improvement. The 28-day mortality rate was higher among patients with progressive/persistent AKI (74.2% vs 23.5%; P < .001) or maximum stage 3 of AKI in the first week. Two-level mixed logistic regression modelling identified independent baseline risk factors for progressive/persistent AKI, including 3 to 4 SIRS criteria, infections due to multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDR), elevated serum bilirubin, and number of ERH-OFs. Follow-up risk factors included increases in bilirubin and chloride levels, and new development of 2 or 3 ERH-OFs. Conclusions Our results show that among CICs admitted to the ICU, the stage and course of AKI in the first week determines outcomes. Strategies combating MDR infections, multiorgan failure, liver failure and intense systemic inflammation could prevent AKI progression or persistence in CICs. Curcumin (CUR) is a biologically active substance and a natural antioxidant, but it is almost insoluble in water and has low bioavailability. A possible solution to this barrier could be to use solvents that exhibit low toxicity and are biodegradable. Choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) can be used as a co-solvent to increase the solubility of curcumin. The objectives of this study are to introduce and prepare DESs, to measure the solubility of CUR in water and DESs as well as in water-DES mixtures with different weight fractions. In this perspective, the solubility of CUR is measured in the mixtures of water with some DESs based on choline chloride (ChCl) and in pure solvents at T = 298.15 K to 318.15 K. The measured solubility data were correlated by the activity coefficients models e-NRTL and UNIQUAC. Enhanced efficiency and stability in Sn-based perovskite solar cells with secondary crystallization growth

The conversion efficiencies reported for Tin (Sn) halide-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) fall a large gap behind those of lead halide-based PSCs, mainly because of poor film quality of the former. Here we report an efficient strategy based on a simple secondary crystallization growth (SCG) technique to improve film quality for tin halide-based PSCs by applying a series of functional amine chlorides on the perovskite surface. They were discovered to enhance the film crystallinity and suppress the oxidation of Sn2+ remarkably, hence reduce trap state density and non-irradiative recombination in the absorber films. Furthermore, the SCG film holds the band levels matching better with carrier transport layers and herein favoring charge extraction at the device interfaces. Consequently, a champion device efficiency of 8.07% was achieved along with significant enhancements in V-oc and J(sc), in contrast to 5.35% of the control device value. Moreover, the SCG film-based devices also exhibit superior stability comparing with the control one.
