Mechanical and durability properties of recycled aggregate concrete produced from recycled and natural aggregate blended based on the Densified Mixture Design Algorithm method

The aim of this study was to reuse recycled concrete aggregates for concrete production by using the Densified Mixture Design Algorithm (DMDA) method for blended aggregates and mixing design based on the evaluation of characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). Recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) was used to replace 30%, 40%, and 50% of the natural coarse aggregate (NCA), respectively, by volume in the samples, and the fine aggregate was a combination of 70% natural fine aggregate (NFA) and 30% recycled fine aggregate (RFA) by volume. A series of tests, including compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), electrical surface resistivity (ESR), thermal conductivity (TC), water absorption, and the rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) were conducted in accordance with the relevant standards. The results illustrated that blending aggregates following to DMDA method suggested an optimum proportion of RCA level which exhibited with highest volume of aggregate per unit volume of combination of RCA and NCA. The results revealed 40% RCA content as the optimum replacement level. Furthermore, the 40% RCA concrete mix exhibited good hardening properties in terms of being only slightly below the 30% RCA mix and significantly higher than the 50% RCA mix. All of the RAC mixtures designed by DMDA method with low cement consumption exhibited good strength development and good durability through 120 days of curing.

Performance based energy, ecological and financial costs of a sustainable alternative cement

This paper presents a comparison of the energy and ecological impacts and financial costs of Alkali Pozzolan Cement (APC), High Volume Fly Ash (HVFA) cement and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) mixtures. The embodied energy, carbon dioxide emission and financial costs were calculated per unit weight of dry binder powder; per unit volume per unit strength of hydrated hardened binder; and finally per unit volume per unit strength per year of service. The performance based indicators therefore consider both strength and durability; with the latter based both on carbonation and chloride environments. The statistical means and variability of the costs were also computed. The results indicate that the energy, ecological and financial costs of APC are very attractive compared to those of OPC or HVFA, when considered either as the cost per unit weight of binder or as the cost per unit performance, whether related to unit strength or both unit strength and year of service. The variability of the APC cost indicators was also the lowest in general among the cements considered. Determination of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline in alginate encapsulated pandanus flavorings by static headspace (SHS) and gas chromatography with nitrogen-phosphorus detection (GC-NPD)

A new form of Pandanus flavoring has been developed using the ionic gelation method. Among the four Pandanus species investigated by solid-phase microextraction (SPME)-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the leaves of P. amaryllifolius Roxb. contained the highest content of the impact aroma compound, 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline. Some terpene volatiles were identified for the first time in these Pandanus species. Acidic extraction with aqueous tartaric acid at pH 5 was the most suitable solvent for obtaining 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline from Pandanus leaves. Moreover, the extract was directly subjected to ionic gelation with the optimized sodium alginate and calcium chloride concentrations of 1.5 and 3% w/v, respectively. Automated static headspace-gas chromatography with a selective nitrogen-phosphorus detection was developed and validated to determine 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline in the dried green alginate beads. The response surface optimization of headspace sample parameters resulted in an optimal equilibration time of 20 min and oven temperature at 123 degrees C. The 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline standard calibration curve was linear from 1.0 to 640 mu g g(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.9998. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.10 and 0.80 mu g g(-1), respectively. On average, a 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline content of 18.49 mu g g(-1) (16.89 to 26.91 mu g g(-1)) was encapsulated in the green dried alginate flavoring products, which was two to three times higher than contained in fresh Pandanus leaves. After 90 days of storage, the 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline content remaining in the green dried alginate beads was 79% of the initial content.

Osteopenia and increased fracture rates are well-recognized in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) disease. In CF pathology, F508del is the most common CFTR mutation, with more than 85% of patients carrying it on at least one allele. The underlying molecular defect in CFTR caused by the F508del-CFTR mutation in osteoclastogenesis, i.e., on the generation and bone-resorption activity of osteoclasts (OCs) from peripheral blood-derived monocytes (PBMCs) remained unexplored. We therefore investigated whether the F508del mutation could affect the osteoclastogenic capacity of PBMCs collected from 15 adult patients bearing the F508de1-CFTR mutation, to modulate their bone-resorptive abilities and the level of sphingosine-1 -phosphate (S1P) produced by OCs, a key factor in the bone mineral density and formation. In the present study, a severe, defective differentiation of CF-F508del PBMCs to CF-F508del OCs without any significant difference in nuclei number per OC was found compared to non-CF healthy PBMCs from 13 subjects after 7-14-days culture periods. We observed a reduced number of formed non-CF healthy OCs in the presence of a selective inhibitor of CFTR chloride conductance (CFTR-Inh(172)). Our data regarding OCs resorptive capabilites revealed that a loss of CFTR chloride activity in OCs led to a marked reduction in their trench-resorption mode. A 7-fold increase of the SlP release by CF-F508del OCs was found compared to non-CF healthy OCs after a 21-days culture period. We hypothesize that defective maturation of F508del-OCs precursor monocytes associated with high S1 P production in the bone environment might contribute to low bone mineral density observed in the CF population.

Bioaccumulation of trace elements affects chick body condition and gut microbiome in greater flamingos

Elevated concentrations of trace elements represent a major concern to wetland ecosystems, since river estuaries are geochemical endpoints that accumulate pollution. Although the negative impact of environmental exposure of highly toxic elements such as Pb and Hg has received substantial attention, we still lack a comprehensive understanding of the effects that these and other common trace elements have on natural populations. We used greater flamingos as a study system within three sites that represent a gradient of pollution. Controlling for environmental sediment exposure, we assessed if signatures of bioaccumulation in feathers for ten trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Se, Sn and Zn) are associated with two known proxies of health: body condition and the gut bacterialmicrobiome. We found evidence of an adverse effect of Se, Hg, and Pb bioaccumulation on body condition. Furthermore, bioaccumulation of the elements As, Cu, Se, Pb and Zn influenced different aspects of the gut microbiome. Bioaccumulation of Se led to a shift in the microbiome composition, largely driven by an enrichment of Bacteroides plebeius, which is linked to the breakdown of sulphated polysaccharides of algae. Bacteroides plebeius was negatively associated with chick body condition, suggesting an adverse effect of a microalgae diet rich in Se. Pb bioaccumulation was linked with a decrease in microbial diversity (adjusted-R-2 = 10.4%) and an increase in heterogeneity of the microbial community (adjusted-R-2 = 10.5%), an indication of impaired gut homeostasis. As, Cu and Zn had more nuanced effects on gut microbiome heterogeneity according to breeding site and bioaccumulation concentration. The Concrete Performance with Iron Tailings Sand Modified by Polypropylene Fibers under Aggressive Environment

This paper aimed to explore the performance of concrete with iron tailings sand modified by polypropylene fibers under aggressive environment. Three kinds of concrete (ordinary concrete, concrete with iron tailings sand (ITS), and concrete with ITS modified by polypropylene fibers) were exposed to drying-wetting cycles in 5% Na2SO4 solution for 28, 56, 84, 112, and 140 days. The performance, such as pores distribution, crack width, corrosion products, mass variation, expansion variation, compressive strength, flexural strength, and the diffusion of sulfate ion were measured at regular time intervals during the whole exposure period to describe the associated evolution laws. The results show that, in the process of the corrosion of sodium sulfate solution, the formation of gypsum and ettringite (AFT) has an important impact on the harmful pores (>0.1 mu m), cracks, mass variation, expansion variation, compressive strength, and flexural strength of the three concrete. Polypropylene fibers can refine the pores development and inhabit the crack development of the concrete with ITS, further alleviating the rate of sulfate ion attack on concrete and the rate of increase of corrosion products, so that the mass variation, the expansion variation, and the reduction of compressive strength and flexural strength can be limited effectively. Furthermore, in the concrete with ITS modified by 0.1% polypropylene fibers, the content of sulfate ions diffused is always the lowest.

A rapid in situ synthesis of wide-spectrum CD@BaCl2 phosphors via anti-solvent recrystallization for white LEDs

The development of solid-state carbon dots with good photoluminescence performance both at room temperature and high temperature is still challenging. Herein, we apply a facile and rapid anti-solvent-induced in situ recrystallization where the carbon dots act as the seeds of heterogeneous nucleation to encapsulate them into barium chloride crystals. Benefiting from the spatial confinement effect of barium chloride, the carbon dots are well separated in the recrystallized barium chloride crystals, thereby inhibiting the non-radiative electron-electron energy interactions between the aggregated carbon dots, presenting a wide-spectrum (FWHM = 107 nm) solid-state green-emission. Impressively, the carbon dot@barium chloride shows excellent photoluminescence thermal stability that at 423 K the intensity can maintain similar to 90% of the initial intensity at room temperature, due to the low electron-electron/electron-phonon non-radiative energy transfer between the carbon dots and barium chloride. Further, the practicability of solid-state carbon dot@barium chloride phosphors was demonstrated by a series of fabricated white light-emitting-diode prototypes, in which the increment in the wide-spectrum green phosphors improved the color rendering index of the prototypes from 78.6 to 89.1. The facile synthesis process and favorable photoluminescence features will shed light on the further development of environment-friendly carbon-dot-based composites for various solid-state optoelectronic devices.
